Ein Doppel-piq dieses Mal, denn von allen Blockchain-Kritiken, die ich bisher gelesen habe, ist das hier eine der wirklich besseren – der trotzdem einige entscheidende Dinge fehlen. 

Der Autor macht sich darin auf, echte Anwendungsfälle für diese Technologie zu finden, die vor drei Jahren als das nächste große Ding gefeiert wurde, die die Wirtschaft revolutionieren wird. Er findet: erstaunlich wenige. Und erklärt nebenbei, wie eine Blockchain funktioniert und was es mit dem Energieverbrauch auf sich hat. Wer schon immer dachte, dass diese Technologie sinnloser Quatsch sei, kann sich nach der Lektüre des Artikels bestätigt fühlen. 

Aber der Text bräuchte eine Ergänzung. Denn das eine, das gigantische Problem, das Blockchains potentiell lösen könnten, lässt der Autor außen vor: verteiltes Vertrauen schaffen. Um das zu finden, musste ich woanders schauen. Tief in den Kommentarspalten von Reddit, wo ein Nutzer die bis dato beste und knappeste Beschreibung für Blockchain-Nutzen geschrieben hat, die ich bisher gefunden habe. Ich zitiere sie leicht gekürzt, das wichtigste habe ich gefettet: 

It turns out that political borders can continue to impede global commerce even in the presence of a cheap global communication medium when the problem of trust cannot be solved in that communication medium. In other words, Amazon customers and eBay customers, and so on, still need banks, lawyers, sheriffs and courts to help them enforce the terms of their agreements, and the Internet does little, if anything, to resolve the trust problems that give rise to this need.
In theory, a global government could solve the trust problems in commerce. But global government has massive political problems of its own -- namely, *who* will run this global government? The United States? Do Hollanders *really* want/need the political machinery of Washington DC imposing regulations on their local political and economic affairs? How do they benefit from this in any way? Some people say, "The UN solves this problem!" but how?? Leaving aside the fact that the UN is little more than a puppet facade for US foreign policy, a nation the size of the US already stretches the meaning of "democracy" well past any reasonable definition at the national scale. How much more meaningless is democracy on a global scale. Why should I have any say in what happens in Zimbabwe or Honduras? My opinion cannot add any value to their local political and economic affairs, so it doesn't make sense to try to force it to.
Everything I wrote in the last paragraph is the unspoken reality understood by a large percentage of the global population that intuitively understands the absurdity of global government. Specifically, while the trend over the last two centuries of history has been towards increasing centralization of political power and decision-making at larger and larger scales, that doesn't mean that the terminus of this trend is inevitable or in any way efficient or desirable. So Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency trend, generally, is a reflection of this dissenting opinion. It is a reflection of other factors, as well. But, in my view, this is the single most important political consideration in respect to *why* Bitcoin exists and continues to grow rapidly. The author of the article completely sidesteps this discussion and chooses to talk about a string of red herrings -- like electricity use -- instead.
