Watching it go wrong in real-time? Indonesia's crossroad between radicalization and moderation
Indonesia, despite being a country of roughly 250 million people often flies under the radar. It is worth a look these days though, to keep a close eye on its development in regards of religious tolerance. Sparked by the sentencing of Jakarta's governor Ahok for blasphemy, the international community pays attention for an exchange. But Ahok's case is just the latest of an ongoing development retraced in the article. While Indonesia may never have been the ideal hub of inter-religious tolerance, as it had been held against other, predominantly Muslim countries, it certainly still provided a good argument against those disqualifying Islam in general as incompatible with the rest of the world. Such argument is still valid of course, however - and sadly - it might be time to find another country for now to point to as a good example. The example of Indonesia, as shown in the article, can be read as part of an ongoing struggle of the multifaceted Muslim worlds between two poles.
