Camille Kouchner is pushing the country to a painful reckoning with incest, and with the elites who excuse one another’s sins

PARIS — Camille Kouchner, a slight, clear-eyed woman who for decades was consumed by guilt, has become the big disrupter of French society. Her battle to liberate herself from a painful family secret has touched a nerve across France.
For decades, Kouchner felt trapped. “Guilt is like a snake,” she writes in “La Familia Grande,” a book whose tale of incest and abuse is also the unsparing portrait of a prominent French family. It was a “poison,” a many-headed “hydra,” invading “all the space in my mind and my heart” — until she felt she had no choice but to set down the unspeakable.
It was not easy. Olivier Duhamel, her stepfather and the man she accuses of sexually abusing her twin brother when they were teenagers, sat at the pinnacle of Parisian intellectual and cultural life before quitting all his posts on the eve of the book’s publication. Her mother, Évelyne Pisier, a noted writer who was once Fidel Castro’s lover and who died in 2017, had turned vehemently on Kouchner over the allegation. The “big family” of the book’s title was by extension a certain left-leaning French cultural elite that had opted to protect one of its own. In short, Kouchner was taking on a lot.
“OK, Camille, you are afraid of the repercussions, but if you do not speak, how can you be whole?” Kouchner, 45, said in an interview. “If you do not speak, you leave an upside-down world. You have to take the risk because you have a small chance of saying to those who suffer that their suffering is not for nothing.”
Her embrace of that “small chance” has led to the sort of politico-cultural detonation that the French call an “affaire.” A #MeTooInceste hashtag has taken off as tens of thousands of French victims break a silencing taboo. The book, published this month, has sold more than 200,000 copies. Several friends of Duhamel, including Élisabeth Guigou, a former minister of justice, have resigned prominent positions.
President Emmanuel Macron has taken to Twitter to hail a liberation through “the courage of a sister who could no longer keep quiet.” He condemned “a silence built by criminals and successive acts of cowardice.”&nbsp;
“It’s really overwhelming,” Kouchner, a lawyer and university lecturer, said in a quiet, almost self-deprecating voice that tends to mask her determined bluntness. Her gaze is frank and direct. “I am very happy about the #MeTooInceste movement, not so much because people are talking — many had already done so — but because they are being listened to.”
However, she continued, her main aim was not political but literary, an attempt to describe her own agonised evolution. As the descendant on her mother’s side of an antisemitic French fascist and on her father’s side of forebears slaughtered at Auschwitz, she had to shape her own identity from a very young age. When she had her own son, she realised she could not keep quiet about Duhamel for fear he might strike again.
She also had to confront her mother’s strange complicity. When asked why she wrote the book, Kouchner replied, “Because my mother is dead.” Her mother had many sides: the playful intellectual whom Kouchner adored; the woman who turned to drink after the suicides of both her parents; the suffering parent whose sister, actress Marie-France Pisier, also died of an apparent suicide. She was also the feminist mother who did not say no in Cuba when Castro — in good macho fashion — sent a car to scoop her up; the mother who left Kouchner’s father, Bernard Kouchner, a founder of Doctors Without Borders and later the French foreign minister, because “he chose to save other children, not his own.”
In many respects, Camille Kouchner’s mother is the pivotal figure of the book, beloved and then estranged. Her mother sided with Duhamel, at least with silence, when confronted in 2008 with the charge that two decades earlier, her second husband had sexually abused his 14-year-old stepson.
Toward the end of the book, in a breathtaking passage, the author quotes her mother as saying, “If you had spoken, I could have left. Your silence is your responsibility. If you had spoken, none of all this would have happened. There was no violence. Your brother was never forced. My husband did nothing. It’s your brother who deceived me.” So is guilt transferred, assuming multiple faces. So does the buried crime metastasise. So does a long-held secret exact its inexorable measure of suffering.
Kouchner, whose brother made her vow silence when he first told her what had happened, writes that she concluded in early adulthood that “my guilt is one of consent. I am guilty of not having stopped my stepfather, of not having understood that incest is forbidden.” (Under French law, a stepfather’s sexual abuse of a child qualifies as incest.)
Her sense of guilt was compounded by her mother’s accusation that her silence was the real crime. Over everything lurked a particular terror: in a family of multiple suicides, her mother’s readiness to take her own life could never be excluded. She died, in the end, of cancer. “My mother inverted responsibilities, inverted roles,” Kouchner said. “She became the victim of my decision not to talk. And when I did talk, she accused me of wanting to ruin her life. I said to her, ‘So should I speak or not? Whatever I do is wrong.’”
And Duhamel? “My mother confronted him, and I think in the end they constructed a story to try to absolve themselves, to hide the violence of the whole thing.” Now there seems to be no containing the “affaire.” Duhamel, 70, has hired a prominent lawyer to defend him. He has said nothing since his resignation this month as head of the body overseeing the renowned Sciences Po university.
It has become clear that Duhamel benefited from the silence of many in his circle of Paris friends, a recurring pattern in cases involving powerful men. Jean Veil, a prominent Paris lawyer, and Frédéric Mion, director of Sciences Po, have both acknowledged that they knew of the accusations of sexual abuse but took no action against Duhamel. Kouchner’s brother, called “Victor” in the book, has for the first time filed suit against Duhamel. The French public prosecutor has opened an investigation for rape of a minor and sexual aggression. An official commission investigating incest has been reinvigorated with the appointment of two new co-presidents.
“It’s only decent that he keeps quiet,” Kouchner said of Duhamel. “Because in reality, he made me keep quiet for many years. Not directly. But still, he crushed us. Until at a certain moment, I said, ‘Why am I keeping quiet? What is this secret that is not a secret, this secret that preserves an executioner?’”
Was “executioner” not a strong word? “Ah, he inflicted a lot of harm on us,” Kouchner said. She noted that Duhamel was unlikely to face punishment because of France’s statute of limitations, one reason she wanted an “indelible” testimony her children and grandchildren could read.
There is much for her descendants to ponder. Kouchner’s evocation of summer days at the family property on the Côte d’Azur is powerful in its evocation of a false idyll: tennis, meals, Scrabble, wine, laughter — as well as nude bathing in the swimming pool, touching under the table and mockery of bourgeois sexual constraints. “It’s forbidden to forbid” was the motto of these family gatherings, she writes. Her grandmother explained to her how to have an orgasm on a bicycle or a horse.
All the while, a serpent lurked, in this family and beyond it. Kouchner quotes a saying dear to her father: “Between the strong and the weak, it’s liberty that oppresses and the law that liberates.” She notes, “I would discover the full meaning of that.”

Shedding Shame and Silence in France

Το ότι προσκολλήθηκε σε αυτή τη «μικρή πιθανότητα» οδήγησε στο είδος πολιτικο-πολιτιστικής έκρηξης που οι Γάλλοι αποκαλούν «affaire» [σημείωση συντάκτη: σκάνδαλο]. Το hashtag #MeTooInceste έχει απογειωθεί καθώς δεκάδες χιλιάδες θύματα από τη Γαλλία σπάζουν το ταμπού της σιωπής. Το βιβλίο, που εκδόθηκε αυτόν τον μήνα, έχει πουλήσει περισσότερα από 200.000 αντίτυπα. Προς το τέλος του βιβλίου, σε ένα συναρπαστικό απόσπασμα, η συγγραφέας παραθέτει τα λόγια της μητέρας της: «Αν είχες μιλήσει, μπορεί να έφευγα. Η σιωπή σου είναι δική σου ευθύνη. Εάν είχατε μιλήσει, τίποτα από αυτά δε θα είχε συμβεί. Δεν υπήρχε βία. Ο αδερφός σου δεν εξαναγκάστηκε ποτέ. Ο άντρας μου δεν έκανε τίποτα. Είναι ο αδερφός σου που με εξαπάτησε». Με αυτό τον τρόπο μεταβιβάζεται η ενοχή, αλλάζοντας πολλά πρόσωπα. Έτσι και το κουκουλωμένο έγκλημα που σαν καρκίνος κάνει μεταστάσεις. Ωσαύτως και ένα μακροχρόνιο μυστικό επιβάλλει τη βαριά οδύνη του.
Η Κουσνέρ, της οποίας ο αδελφός την ανάγκασε να πάρει όρκο σιωπής όταν της είπε για πρώτη φορά τι είχε συμβεί, γράφει ότι στην αρχή της ενηλικίωσης της κατέληξε πως «η ενοχή μου είναι συγκατάθεση. Είμαι ένοχη που δε σταμάτησα τον πατριό μου, που δεν κατάλαβα ότι η αιμομιξία είναι απαγορευμένη». &nbsp;(Σύμφωνα με τη γαλλική νομοθεσία, η σεξουαλική κακοποίηση ενός παιδιού από τον πατριό του θεωρείται αιμομιξία.)
Η αίσθηση ενοχής της επιδεινώθηκε από την κατηγορία της μητέρας της ότι η σιωπή της ήταν το πραγματικό έγκλημα. «Είναι μόνο από αξιοπρέπεια που δε βγαίνει να μιλήσει», λέει η Κουσνέρ για τον Ντουαμέλ. «Επειδή στην πραγματικότητα, με έκανε να σιωπήσω για πολλά χρόνια. Όχι άμεσα. Όμως, μας συνέτριψε. Μέχρι μια συγκεκριμένη στιγμή, είπα: «Γιατί παραμένω σιωπηλή; Ποιο είναι αυτό το μυστικό που δεν είναι μυστικό, αυτό το μυστικό που προστατεύει τον δήμιο;»».
Το «δήμιος» δεν ήταν ισχυρή λέξη; «Αχ, μας έκανε πολύ κακό», λέει η Κουσνέρ. Σημείωσε ότι ο Ντουαμέλ ήταν απίθανο να τιμωρηθεί λόγω των προβλέψεων περί παραγραφής στη Γαλλία, που είναι και ένας λόγος που ήθελε μια «ανεξίτηλη» μαρτυρία την οποία θα μπορούσαν να διαβάσουν τα παιδιά και τα εγγόνια της.
Υπάρχουν πολλά για να σκεφτούν οι απόγονοί της. Οι καλοκαιρινές διακοπές των Κουσνέρ στην οικογενειακή ιδιοκτησία στην Κυανή Ακτή διαδραματίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στη δημιουργία μιας ψευδούς ειδυλλιακής κατάστασης: τένις, γεύματα, Scrabble, κρασί, γέλιο - καθώς και γυμνισμός στην πισίνα, αγγίγματα κάτω από το τραπέζι και κοροϊδία των αστικών σεξουαλικών περιορισμών. «Απαγορεύεται η απαγόρευση» ήταν το σύνθημα αυτών των οικογενειακών συγκεντρώσεων, γράφει. Όλο το διάστημα, ένα φίδι παραμόνευε, σε αυτήν την οικογένεια και πέρα από αυτήν. Η Κουσνέρ παραθέτει ένα ρητό που αγαπάει ο πατέρας της: «Μεταξύ των ισχυρών και των αδύναμων, είναι η ελευθερία που καταπιέζει και ο νόμος που απελευθερώνει». Σημειώνει, «Ανακάλυψα τι σημαίνει αυτό πλήρως».

Σπάει η ντροπή και η σιωπή στη Γαλλία

La « grande famille » du titre du livre était par extension une certaine élite culturelle française de gauche qui avait choisi de protéger l'un des siens. Bref, Mme Kouchner a beaucoup eu à endosser.
« OK, Camille, tu as peur des répercussions, mais si tu ne parles pas, comment peux-tu être entière ? », a livré la femme de 45 ans dans une interview. « Si tu ne parles pas, tu laisses un monde sens dessus-dessous. Tu dois courir ce risque, car tu as une petite chance de dire à ceux qui souffrent que leur souffrance n'est pas vaine ».
Son acceptation de cette « petite chance » a conduit à une sorte de détonation politico-culturelle, que les Français appellent « affaire ». Le hashtag #MeTooInceste a pris de l'ampleur et des dizaines de milliers de victimes françaises ont brisé un tabou silencieux. Le livre, publié ce mois-ci, s'est vendu à plus de 200 000 exemplaires. Plusieurs amis de M. Duhamel, dont Élisabeth Guigou, ex-ncienne ministre de la Justice, ont démissionné de postes importants.
Le président Emmanuel Macron y est allé de son tweet pour saluer une libération, grâce au « courage d'une sœur qui ne pouvait plus se taire ». Il a condamné « un silence construit par des criminels et des actes de lâcheté successifs ».
« C'est vraiment bouleversant », dit Mme Kouchner, avocate et professeur d'université, d'une voix calme, presque autodérisoire, qui tend à masquer une franchise déterminée. Son regard est franc et direct. « Je suis très heureuse du mouvement #MeTooInceste, non pas tant parce que les gens parlent - beaucoup l'avaient déjà fait - mais parce qu'ils sont écoutés ».
Cependant, poursuit-elle, son objectif principal n'est pas politique mais littéraire : une tentative de décrire l'évolution de sa propre tourmente intérieure. En tant que descendante du côté maternel d'un fasciste français antisémite et du côté paternel d'ancêtres massacrés à Auschwitz, elle a dû se forger sa propre identité dès son plus jeune âge. Lorsqu'elle a eu son propre fils, elle a réalisé qu'elle ne pouvait pas se taire au sujet de M. Duhamel de peur qu'il ne frappe à nouveau.
Elle a également dû faire face à l'étrange complicité de sa mère. Lorsqu'on lui a demandé pourquoi elle avait écrit ce livre, Mme Kouchner a répondu : « Parce que ma mère est morte ». Sa mère avait plusieurs facettes : l'intellectuelle enjouée que Mme Kouchner adorait ; la femme qui s'est tournée vers l'alcool après les suicides de ses deux parents ; la mère souffrante dont la sœur, l'actrice Marie-France Pisier, est aussi morte d'un suicide apparent. Elle était aussi la mère féministe qui n'a pas dit non à Cuba lorsque Fidel Castro - en bon macho - a envoyé une voiture pour la cueillir ; la mère qui a quitté le père de Mme Kouchner, Bernard Kouchner, un des fondateurs de Médecins sans frontières et plus tard ministre français des Affaires étrangères, parce qu'« il a choisi de sauver d'autres enfants, pas les siens ».
À bien des égards, la mère de Camille Kouchner est la figure centrale du livre, aimée et dont elle s'est éloignée. Sa mère s'est rangée du côté de M. Duhamel, du moins en silence, lorsqu'elle a été confrontée en 2008 à l'accusation selon laquelle deux décennies plus tôt, son deuxième mari avait abusé sexuellement son beau-fils de 14 ans.
Vers la fin du livre, dans un passage à couper le souffle, l'auteure cite sa mère : « Si tu avais parlé, j'aurais pu partir. Ton silence est ta responsabilité. Si tu avais parlé, rien de tout cela ne serait arrivé. Il n'y a pas eu de violence. Ton frère n'a jamais été forcé. Mon mari n'a rien fait. C'est ton frère qui m'a trompée. » Ainsi se transfère la culpabilité, en prenant plusieurs visages. Ainsi le crime enterré se répand comme une métastase. Ainsi un secret trop longtemps gardé donne la mesure inexorable de sa souffrance.
Mme Kouchner, dont le frère lui a fait promettre de garder le silence lorsqu'il lui a raconté pour la première fois ce qui s'était passé, écrit qu'elle en a conclu au début de l'âge adulte : « Ma culpabilité est celle du consentement. Je suis coupable de ne pas avoir arrêté mon beau-père, de ne pas avoir compris que l'inceste est interdit ». (En droit français, l'abus sexuel d'un enfant par son beau-père est qualifié d'inceste).
Son sentiment de culpabilité a été aggravé par l'accusation de sa mère selon laquelle son silence était le véritable crime. Par-dessus tout, une terreur particulière se cachait : dans une famille aux prises avec de multiples suicides, la volonté de sa mère de s'ôter la vie ne pouvait jamais être exclue. Elle a fini par mourir d'un cancer. « Ma mère a inversé les responsabilités, inversé les rôles, dit Mme Kouchner. Elle est devenue la victime de ma décision de ne pas parler. Et quand j'ai parlé, elle m'a accusé de vouloir ruiner sa vie. Je lui ai dit : "Alors, dois-je parler ou non ? Quoi que je fasse, c'est mal". »
Et M. Duhamel ? « Ma mère l'a confronté, et je pense qu'à la fin ils ont construit une histoire pour essayer de s'absoudre, pour cacher la violence de tout cela. » Aujourd'hui, il semble que rien ne puisse retenir l'« affaire ». M. Duhamel, 70 ans, a engagé un éminent avocat pour le défendre. Il n'a rien dit depuis sa démission, ce mois-ci, de la tête de la Fondation nationale des sciences politiques, qui supervise le prestigieux Sciences Po Paris.
Il est devenu évident que M. Duhamel a bénéficié du silence de nombreux membres de son cercle d'amis parisiens, un schéma récurrent dans les affaires impliquant des hommes puissants. Jean Veil, un éminent avocat parisien, et Frédéric Mion, directeur de Sciences Po, ont tous deux reconnu qu'ils étaient au courant des accusations d'abus sexuels mais n'ont pris aucune mesure à l'encontre de M. Duhamel. Le frère de Mme Kouchner, appelé « Victor » dans le livre, a pour la première fois porté plainte contre M. Duhamel. Le parquet français a ouvert une enquête pour viol sur mineur et agression sexuelle. Une commission officielle d'enquête sur l'inceste s'est relancée avec la nomination de deux nouveaux coprésidents.
« C'est tout à fait décent qu'il se taise », estime Mme Kouchner à propos de M. Duhamel. « Parce qu'en réalité, il m'a fait me taire pendant de nombreuses années. Pas directement. Mais quand même, il nous a écrasés. Jusqu'à ce qu'à un certain moment, je lui dise : "Pourquoi je me tais ? Quel est ce secret qui n'est pas un secret, ce secret qui préserve un bourreau ?"»
Le mot « bourreau » n'est-il pas un peu fort ? « Ah, il nous a fait beaucoup de mal », rétorque Camille Kouchner. Elle rappelle que M. Duhamel ne risque pas d'être emprisonné en raison de la prescription en France, une des raisons pour lesquelles elle voulait un témoignage « indélébile » que ses enfants et petits-enfants pourraient lire.
Ses descendants auront beaucoup à réfléchir. L'évocation par Mme Kouchner des journées d'été dans la propriété familiale sur la Côte d'Azur est puissante dans son évocation d'une fausse idylle : tennis, repas, Scrabble, vin, rires - ainsi que des baignades nues dans la piscine, des attouchements sous la table et des moqueries sur les contraintes sexuelles bourgeoises. « Il est interdit d'interdire » était la devise de ces réunions de famille, écrit-elle. Sa grand-mère lui a expliqué comment avoir un orgasme sur un vélo ou un cheval.
Pendant ce temps, un serpent rôdait, dans cette famille et au-delà. Mme Kouchner cite un dicton cher à son père : « Entre le fort et le faible, c'est la liberté qui opprime et la loi qui libère. » Elle note : « J'allais découvrir toute la portée de cette phrase. »

Inceste en France : la fin de la honte et du silence

Camille Kouchner, eine zierliche, klarsichtige Frau, plagten jahrzehntelang Schuldgefühle. Ihr Kampf, sich von einem schmerzhaften Familiengeheimnis zu befreien, hat in ganz Frankreich einen Nerv getroffen, und heftige Diskussionen ausgelöst.
Jahrzehntelang fühlte sich Kouchner gefangen. "Schuld ist wie eine Schlange", schreibt sie in La Familia Grande, einem Buch, dessen Geschichte von Inzest und Missbrauch gleichzeitig auf schonungslose Weise eine prominente französische Familie porträtiert. Ein "Gift" sei sie gewesen, eine vielköpfige "Hydra", die "meinen Kopf und mein Herz" einnahm – bis Kouchner das Gefühl hatte, keine andere Wahl zu haben, als das Unaussprechliche niederzuschreiben.
Das war nicht einfach. Olivier Duhamel, ihr Stiefvater, ist der Mann, den sie beschuldigt, ihren Zwillingsbruder als Teenager sexuell missbraucht zu haben. Duhamel war einer der Leitfiguren des intellektuellen und kulturellen Lebens in Paris, bevor er am Vorabend der Veröffentlichung des Buches alle seine Posten aufgab. Kouchners Mutter Évelyne Pisier, eine bekannte Schriftstellerin und ehemalige Geliebte von Fidel Castro, starb 2017. Als ihre Tochter ihre Vorwürfe erhob, stellte sie sich gegen sie. Mit der "großen Familie" aus dem Buchtitel ist im weitesten Sinne der linksgerichtete Teil der französischen Kulturelite gemeint, der sich dafür entschieden hatte, einen der ihren zu schützen. Kouchner hat viel auf sich genommen, als sie ihre Stimme erhob.
"Ich sagte mir: Klar, Camille, du hast Angst vor den Auswirkungen, aber wie kannst du es mit dir selbst vereinbaren, nichts zu sagen?", sagte Kouchner, 45, in einem Interview. "Wenn du nicht sprichst, duldest du eine verkehrte Welt. Man muss das Risiko eingehen. Weil darin eine kleine Chance liegt, denen, die leiden, zu sagen, dass ihr Leiden nicht egal ist."
Diese "kleine Chance" hat zu der Art von politisch-kultureller Detonation geführt, die die Franzosen eine "affaire" nennen. Unter dem Hashtag #MeTooInceste brechen Zehntausende von französischen Opfern mit einem Tabu, das sie bis jetzt zum Schweigen gebracht hatte. Das Buch, das diesen Monat herauskam, wurde bereits mehr als 200.000 Mal verkauft. Mehrere Freundinnen und Freunde von Duhamel, darunter die ehemalige Justizministerin Élisabeth Guigou, sind von ihren Posten zurückgetreten.
Präsident Emmanuel Macron sprach auf Twitter von einer Befreiung durch "den Mut einer Schwester, die nicht länger schweigen konnte". Er verurteilte "ein Schweigen, das von diesen Kriminellen errichtet wurde" sowie diesbezügliche "Feigheit".
"Es ist wirklich überwältigend." Kouchner, Juristin und Universitätsdozentin, spricht ruhig, fast selbstironisch, dennoch entschlossen. Ihr Blick ist offen und direkt. "Ich bin sehr glücklich über die #MeTooInceste-Bewegung. Nicht so sehr, weil die Leute jetzt sprechen – viele hatten das schon vorher getan – sondern weil ihnen nun auch zugehört wird."
Ihre Hauptmotivation sei jedoch nicht politisch, sondern literarisch gewesen; ein Versuch, ihre eigene quälende Entwicklung zu beschreiben. Als Nachfahrin eines antisemitischen französischen Faschisten mütterlicherseits und von in Auschwitz ermordeten Vorfahren väterlicherseits musste sie von klein auf ihre eigene Identität finden. Als ihr Sohn zur Welt kam, wurde ihr klar, dass sie über Duhamel nicht weiter schweigen konnte; aus Angst, er könnte wieder zuschlagen.
Sie musste sich auch mit der befremdlichen Mitschuld ihrer Mutter auseinandersetzen. Auf die Frage, warum sie das Buch geschrieben habe, antwortete Kouchner: "Weil meine Mutter tot ist." Ihre Mutter hatte viele Seiten: die humorvolle Intellektuelle, die Kouchner verehrte; die Frau, die nach den Selbstmorden ihrer beiden Eltern alkoholkrank wurde; der leidende Elternteil, dessen Schwester, die Schauspielerin Marie-France Pisier, die ebenfalls vermutlich durch Selbstmord starb. Sie war die feministische Mutter, die in Kuba nicht nein sagte, als Castro, ganz Macho, ein Auto schickte, um sie abzuholen. Den Vater, Bernard Kouchner, Mitbegründer von Ärzte ohne Grenzen und später französischer Außenminister, verließ die Mutter, weil "er sich entschied, lieber andere Kinder zu retten, als seine eigenen."
In vielerlei Hinsicht ist Camille Kouchners Mutter die zentrale Figur des Buches, erst geliebt und dann entfremdet. Als sie 2008 mit dem Vorwurf konfrontiert wurde, dass ihr zweiter Ehemann zwei Jahrzehnte zuvor seinen 14-jährigen Stiefsohn sexuell missbraucht habe, stellte sie sich auf seine Seite – indem sie schwieg.
Gegen Ende des Buches zitiert die Autorin in einer eindrücklichen Passage ihre Mutter mit den Worten: "Wenn du gesprochen hättest, hätte ich gehen können. Dein Schweigen ist deine Verantwortung. Wenn du gesprochen hättest, wäre das alles nicht passiert. Es gab keine Gewalt. Dein Bruder wurde nicht gezwungen. Mein Mann hat nichts getan. Es ist dein Bruder, der mich betrogen hat." So wird die Schuld übertragen, nimmt mehrere Gesichter an. Sie metastasierte als vermeintlich unentdecktes Verbrechen. Und fordert als ein lang gehütetes Geheimnis ein unerbittliches Maß an Leid.
Kouchners Bruder ließ sie schwören, dass sie darüber schweigen werde, als er ihr zum ersten Mal erzählte, was passiert war. Sie schreibt, dass sie als junge Erwachsene zu dem Schluss kam, dass "meine Schuld eine des Einverständnisses ist. Ich bin schuldig, dass ich meinen Stiefvater nicht aufgehalten habe, dass ich nicht verstanden habe, dass Inzest verboten ist." (Nach französischem Recht gilt sexuelle Gewalt eines Stiefvaters an seinem Kind als Inzest.)
Der Vorwurf ihrer Mutter, ihr Schweigen sei das eigentliche Verbrechen, verstärkte ihre Schuldgefühle. Eine Angst lauerte stets im Hintergrund: In einer Familie mit mehreren Selbstmorden konnte die Bereitschaft ihrer Mutter, sich das Leben zu nehmen, nie ausgeschlossen werden. Sie starb schließlich an Krebs. "Meine Mutter verdrehte die Verantwortlichkeiten, vertauschte die Rollen", so Kouchner. "Sie wurde das Opfer meiner Entscheidung, nicht zu reden. Und als ich dann doch redete, beschuldigte sie mich, ihr Leben ruinieren zu wollen. Ich sagte zu ihr: 'Soll ich nun reden, oder nicht? Was immer ich auch tue, es ist falsch.'"
Und Duhamel? "Meine Mutter konfrontierte ihn, und ich glaube, am Ende konstruierten sie eine Geschichte, die sie freisprechen sollte, um und die Gewalttätigkeit der ganzen Sache verbergen." Nun scheint die "Affäre" nicht mehr aufzuhalten zu sein. Duhamel, 70, hat einen prominenten Anwalt beauftragt, ihn zu verteidigen. Seit seinem Rücktritt in diesem Monat als Leiter des Gremiums, das die renommierte Universität Sciences Po beaufsichtigt, hat er sich nicht mehr öffentlich geäußert.
Es ist deutlich geworden, dass Duhamel vom Schweigen vieler in seinem Pariser Freundeskreis profitiert hat – ein wiederkehrendes Muster in Fällen, in denen mächtige Männer involviert sind. Jean Veil, ein prominenter Pariser Anwalt, und Frédéric Mion, Direktor der Sciences Po, haben beide zugegeben, dass sie von den Vorwürfen wussten, aber nichts gegen Duhamel unternahmen. Kouchners Bruder, der in dem Buch "Victor" genannt wird, hat erstmals Klage gegen Duhamel eingereicht. Die französische Staatsanwaltschaft hat eine Untersuchung wegen Vergewaltigung eines Minderjährigen und sexueller Nötigung eingeleitet. Eine offizielle Kommission zur Untersuchung von Inzest wurde mit der Ernennung von zwei neuen Co-Präsidenten wiederaufgenommen.&nbsp;
"Es ist nur anständig, dass er schweigt", sagte Kouchner über Duhamel. "Denn in Wirklichkeit hat er mich dazu gebracht, viele Jahre lang zu schweigen. Nicht direkt. Aber trotzdem hat er uns erdrückt. Bis ich in einem bestimmten Moment sagte: 'Warum schweige ich? Was ist dieses Geheimnis, das kein Geheimnis ist, dieses Geheimnis, das einen Henker schützt?'"
Ist "Henker" nicht ein zu starkes Wort? "Er hat uns viel Leid zugefügt", sagt Kouchner. Sie merkte an, dass es wegen der französischen Verjährungsfrist unwahrscheinlich sei, dass Duhamel bestraft werden würde; ein Grund, warum sie ein "unauslöschliches" Zeugnis wollte, das ihre Kinder und Enkelkinder lesen könnten.
Für ihre Nachkommen gibt es viel aufzuarbeiten. Kouchners Erinnerungen an Sommertage auf dem Familienanwesen an der Côte d'Azur sind kraftvoll in ihrem Heraufbeschwören einer falschen Idylle: Tennis, Essen, Scrabble, Wein, Lachen – aber auch Nacktbaden im Swimmingpool, Berührungen unter dem Tisch und Spott über bürgerliche Sexualzwänge. "Verbieten ist verboten" war das Motto dieser Familientreffen, schreibt sie. Ihre Großmutter erklärte ihr, wie man auf einem Fahrrad oder einem Pferd einen Orgasmus haben kann.
Das Grauen war stets präsent. Kouchner zitiert ein Sprichwort, das ihr Vater sehr mochte: "Zwischen den Starken und den Schwachen ist es die Freiheit, die unterdrückt, und das Gesetz, das befreit." Und merkt an: "Die Bedeutung davon ist weitreichender, je mehr man sich dessen bewusst wird."

Missbrauch in Frankreichs Eliten: Schweigen und Schande

PARÍS — Camille Kouchner, una mujer delgada y de ojos claros que durante décadas estuvo consumida por la culpa, se ha convertido en la gran agitadora de la sociedad francesa. Su lucha por liberarse de un doloroso secreto familiar ha tocado una fibra sensible en todo el país.&nbsp;
Durante décadas, Kouchner se sintió atrapada. "La culpa es como una serpiente", escribe en La familia grande, un libro cuya historia de incesto y abusos es también el retrato descarnado de una prominente familia francesa. Era un "veneno", una "Hidra" de muchas cabezas, que invadía "todo el espacio de mi mente y mi corazón", hasta que sintió que no tenía más remedio que dejar constancia de lo impronunciable.
No fue fácil. Olivier Duhamel, su padrastro y el hombre al que acusa de haber abusado sexualmente de su hermano gemelo cuando eran adolescentes, se encontraba en la cúspide de la vida intelectual y cultural parisina antes de renunciar a todos sus cargos en vísperas de la publicación del libro. Su madre, Évelyne Pisier, una destacada escritora que fue amante de Fidel Castro y que falleció en 2017, se había vuelto a poner vehemente contra Kouchner por la acusación. La "gran familia" del título del libro era, por extensión, una cierta élite cultural francesa de izquierdas que había optado por proteger a uno de los suyos. En resumen, Kouchner estaba asumiendo un gran riesgo.&nbsp;
"Bien, Camille, tienes miedo a las repercusiones, pero si no hablas, ¿cómo puedes mantener tu integridad?", dice Kouchner, de 45 años, en una entrevista. "Si no hablas, dejas un mundo patas arriba. Tienes que arriesgarte porque tienes una pequeña oportunidad de decir a los que sufren que ese padecimiento no es en vano".
Que Kouchner haya aprovechado esa "pequeña oportunidad", ha servido para detonar en el ámbito político y cultural algo que los franceses llaman "affaire". El hashtag #MeTooInceste ha despegado mientras decenas de miles de víctimas francesas rompen un tabú. El libro, publicado este mes, ha vendido más de 200.000 ejemplares. Varios amigos de Duhamel, entre ellos la exministra de Justicia Élisabeth Guigou, han renunciado a cargos importantes.
El presidente Emmanuel Macron ha recurrido a Twitter para elogiar esa liberación gracias a "la valentía de una hermana que ya no podía callar" y ha condenado "un silencio construido por criminales y sucesivos actos de cobardía".
"Es realmente sobrecogedor", comenta con sosiego y casi autocrítica Kouchner, abogada y profesora universitaria con tendencia a enmascarar su decidida franqueza. Su mirada es natural y directa. "Me alegro mucho del movimiento #MeTooInceste, no tanto porque la gente hable, puesto que muchos ya lo habían hecho sino porque se les escucha".
Sin embargo, su principal objetivo no es político, sino literario, un intento de describir su propia evolución agónica, afirma. Como descendiente por parte de madre de un fascista francés antisemita y por parte de padre de antepasados asesinados en Auschwitz, tuvo que forjar su propia identidad desde muy joven. Cuando tuvo su propio hijo, se dio cuenta de que no podía callar sobre Duhamel por miedo a que volviera a atacar.
También tuvo que enfrentarse a la extraña complicidad de su madre. Cuando le preguntaron por qué había escrito el libro, Kouchner respondió: "Porque mi madre está muerta". Su madre tenía muchas facetas: la intelectual juguetona a la que Kouchner adoraba; la mujer que se entregó a la bebida tras los suicidios de sus dos padres; la madre sufridora cuya hermana, la actriz Marie-France Pisier, también murió de por un aparente suicidio. También fue la madre feminista que no dijo que no en Cuba cuando Castro, siguiendo su onda machista, envió un coche para recogerla; la madre que dejó al padre de Kouchner, Bernard Kouchner, fundador de Médicos Sin Fronteras y más tarde ministro de Asuntos Exteriores francés, porque "eligió salvar a otros niños, no a los suyos".
En muchos aspectos, la madre de Camille Kouchner es la figura central del libro, amada y luego rechazada. Su madre se posicionó a favor de Duhamel, al menos con el silencio, cuando se enfrentó en 2008 a la acusación de que, dos décadas antes, su segundo marido había abusado sexualmente de su hijastro de 14 años.
Hacia el final del libro, en un pasaje impresionante, la autora incluye una cita de su madre. "Si hubieras hablado, podría haberme ido. Tu silencio es tu responsabilidad. Si hubieras hablado, nada de esto habría ocurrido. No hubo violencia. Tu hermano nunca fue forzado. Mi marido no hizo nada. Es tu hermano quien me engañó". Así se transfiere la culpa, asumiendo múltiples rostros. Así hace metástasis el crimen enterrado. Así es como un secreto largamente guardado impone su inexorable medida de sufrimiento.
Kouchner, cuyo hermano le hizo jurar silencio cuando le contó por primera vez lo que había sucedido, escribe que llegó a la conclusión en su temprana edad adulta de que "mi culpa es de consentimiento. Soy culpable de no haber detenido a mi padrastro, de no haber entendido que el incesto está prohibido". (Según la legislación francesa, el abuso sexual de un padrastro sobre un niño se considera incesto).
Su sentimiento de culpa se agravó con la acusación de su madre de que su silencio era el verdadero delito. Por encima de todo acechaba un terror particular: en una familia de múltiples suicidios, nunca se pudo excluir la disposición de su madre a quitarse la vida. Al final, murió de cáncer. "Mi madre invirtió las responsabilidades, invirtió los papeles", explica Kouchner. "Se convirtió en la víctima de mi decisión de no hablar. Y cuando hablé, me acusó de querer arruinar su vida. Le dije: '¿Debo hablar o no?' Cualquier cosa que haga está mal".
¿Y Duhamel? "Mi madre se enfrentó a él, y creo que al final construyeron una historia para intentar absolverse, para ocultar la violencia de todo el asunto". Ahora que parece que no se puede contener el "affaire", Duhamel, de 70 años, ha contratado a un destacado abogado para que le defienda. No ha dicho nada desde su dimisión este mes como jefe del organismo que supervisa la renombrada universidad Sciences Po.
Ha quedado claro que Duhamel se benefició del silencio de muchos en su círculo de amigos de París, un patrón recurrente en los casos que involucran a hombres poderosos. Jean Veil, un destacado abogado de París, y Frédéric Mion, director de Sciences Po, han reconocido que conocían las acusaciones de abusos sexuales, pero no tomaron ninguna medida contra Duhamel. El hermano de Kouchner, llamado "Víctor" en el libro, ha presentado por primera vez una demanda contra Duhamel. El fiscal francés ha abierto una investigación por violación de un menor y agresión sexual. Una comisión oficial que investiga el incesto ha sido reforzada con el nombramiento de dos nuevos copresidentes.
"Es decente que guarde silencio", señala Kouchner sobre Duhamel. "Porque en realidad, él me hizo callar durante muchos años. No directamente. Pero aun así, nos machacó. Hasta que en un momento determinado dije: '¿Por qué me callo? ¿Qué es este secreto que no es un secreto, este secreto que preserva un verdugo?".
¿No es "verdugo" una palabra fuerte? "Ah, nos hizo mucho daño", señala Kouchner, que además indica que es poco probable que Duhamel se enfrente a un castigo por la prescripción del delito en Francia. &nbsp;Esta es una de las razones por las que quería un testimonio "indeleble" que sus hijos y nietos pudieran leer.
Sus descendientes tienen mucho que reflexionar. La evocación que hace Kouchner de los días de verano en la propiedad familiar de la Costa Azul es poderosa en su evocación de un falso idilio: tenis, comidas, Scrabble, vino, risas... así como baños desnudos en la piscina, tocamientos por debajo de la mesa y burlas a las limitaciones sexuales burguesas. "Está prohibido prohibir" era el lema de estas reuniones familiares, escribe. Su abuela le explicaba cómo tener un orgasmo sobre una bicicleta o un caballo.
