In Greece it took dozens of femicides, such as the murder of Eleni Topaloudi, to mourn the victims of macho masculinity, like Vangelis Giakoumakis, as well as seeing Zak Costopoulos being brutally murdered. But despite the delay, the veil of silence is finally being shredded.

#MeToo "speaks" many languages, but it tells the same story in all of them, "the story of hunting from the lion's side" (as an African proverb says). The movement, which is (finally) spreading across Greece, is already three years old all over the world. It has not only sent some powerful men to prison for the rapes they committed, but it is achieving much more: it shifts the agenda of the public debate, influences the political climate, goes up against powerful institutions, shakes structural sexism, questions class, ethnic and gender privileges in practice, takes on the myth of heteronormativity, exposes the culture of rape, shatters the foundations of surrendered hierarchies and power structures, and demands changes in the "sanctuaries" of the patriarchy, the legislature and the executive.
"I was seven" - the sign held by Nancy Allen that day in November 2017, as she walked among countless other women in the heart of Hollywood, near the theatre where the Oscars are awarded every year. That sign was both a confession, a cry and a claim. "Harvey Weinstein is a joke, women workers just got woke" women shouted, as #MeToo was already causing the first earthquakes in the entertainment industry.
"For every Weinstein, there are a hundred men in the neighbourhood who do exactly the same thing", said Tarana Burke, a Bronx activist who launched the #MeToo campaign in 2006 - &nbsp;a full 11 years before it became a global movement, with almost five million people responding within 24 hours to the tweet of actress Alyssa Milano and sharing their experiences on social media.
Burke is right: Hollywood and the entertainment industry can attract more publicity in any situation - and now in cases of abuse - but no workplace or community can claim innocence when it comes to abuse and violence.
Women, LGBTQI people, and all those who are in a position of disadvantage within the patriarchal system of relations, are equally threatened everywhere: in the glorious boulevards of New York and the narrow alleys of Mumbai, in the offices of multinationals and in the production lines of factories, in amphitheatres and in their own homes.
Abuse, sexual harassment, rape do not discriminate, however, as research shows, there are jobs or conditions that make people even more vulnerable. Just take a quick look at the multitude of surveys republished by the Institute for Women's Policy Research, one of the most powerful think-tanks in the US, to understand why certain groups find it difficult to break the silence: refugees and asylum seekers, undocumented immigrants and those who do not have a permanent residence permit, workers in the catering industry, those who provide cleaning services and those who work in the agricultural sector in remote areas, women in male-dominated areas (such as the army, the construction sector, scientific research).
#MeToo isn't saying anything new, on the contrary, it says something very old, only it says it loudly, simultaneously and all over the world. And this is precisely its core: it gives a voice to those who have had their voice stolen by patriarchy, it gives visibility to those whom patriarchy keeps invisible, it challenges power relations, it resists exploitation, it demands another world. That is exactly what emancipation and liberation movements always do - with one difference: #MeToo - born and raised from feminist movements - is a child of the digital age.
Social media gives movements unprecedented visibility and the ability to spread their message simultaneously, unmediated by the media, around the world: for example, on Google, in the first year after #MeToo started, searches for harassment and abuse increased by 95% compared to 2010, while the entire American press was forced to engage with this issue and keep it very high on its agenda for nine months.
It seems that the phrase (and attitude) coined and handed down to us by the feminists of the 1970s, that "the personal is political", is now absolutely substantiated.
Consider, for example, the story of Sofia Bekatorou, who shared the story of her rape: her own abuse revealed a whole web of relationships and dependencies, entanglements of power and financial power in the field of professional sport. The same thing was achieved through the confession of Nikos S. [editor's note: a man who alleges he was raped by famed actor/director and former artistic director of Greece's National Theatre, Dimitris Lignadis]: to reveal the abuse of power and favouritism in the theatre world, which went so far as the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, covering it up, even though there were serious indications of criminal acts.
In a short time the Greek #MeToo has already achieved a lot - suffice it to say, three months ago, the police arrested the few feminists protesting against femicides in Syntagma Square and on Thursday &nbsp;the movement and everything it has revealed so far was widely discussed in Parliament. It is precisely this movement that urges Justice to move at a fast pace, pushes for changes in the institutional framework for professional sports, supports the Universities - foremost the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki - where dozens of complaints have been made - to create equality committees.
Under the enormous pressure of this movement, the Prime Minister announced changes in the Penal Code by tightening the penalties for sexual offences and made a commitment that: from September sexual education will be introduced in all schools, a central portal metoo.gov.gr will be set up where complaints can be filed in real time, a special register will be established for all professionals who come into contact with children and adolescents, Parliament will be expected to ratify Convention 190 of the International Labour Organization for the Elimination of Violence and Harassment, while codes of conduct will become mandatory for every business.
It took this country dozens of femicides, like that of Eleni Topaloudi [editor's note: an 18-year-old student who was brutally raped and murdered by two young men in Rhodes], to mourn the victims of macho masculinity, like Vangelis Giakoumakis [editor's note: a 20-year-old who committed suicide after serious bullying by fellow students], and to see Zak Costopoulos being brutally murdered at noon in broad daylight in the middle of the street to get here. It took countless female trafficking victims to suffer without society watching - but, albeit belatedly - we are now here and the veil of silence is finally being shredded to pieces.
We are here with all the demands open - because it is not enough for the survivors of gender-based violence to just speak, but we also need police and justice that will act quickly, efficiently and, above all, without traumatising people over and over again; structures are needed to support victims, equality committees are needed in all bodies and unions, the Labour Inspectorate needs reinforcement and logistical infrastructure, people who are abused in refugee and immigrant camps need to have a voice. #MeToo, as it has unfolded around the world so far, has a lot to teach us about the struggles ahead.
<h3>A raging "river" around the world</h3>
By speaking publicly about everything that we have been taught should remain unspoken or within our four walls (and sometimes even within our inner walls), by speaking loudly about rape, abuse, discrimination, the people all over the world who have entered the raging #MeToo river have achieved a lot and are demanding much more.
In recent years, women across the world have taken to the streets en masse and with explosive protests demanding justice. From "Ni Una Menos" in Argentina, to the Turkish "# UykularınızKaçsın" ("Lose your sleep"), the demand is singular and universal: this world must change.
In Greece, where the women's rights movement has fought many serious battles for decades and the LGBTQI movement is also fighting vigorously, the issues of gender oppression are finally entering the central political scene. But also in the Balkans, our neighbourhood, women are demanding change. In Serbia in January, Milena Radulovic, a 26-year-old actress, complained that when she was still underage she was sexually abused by a well-known professor and director - other women followed, breaking their silence. The allegations soon sparked a backlash in Croatia, Slovenia, North Macedonia and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Women unite in this common struggle and it seems as if one voice echoes the voices of others, triggering battles in space and time. "Today is a victory for all women", stated Khadija Siddiqui, at the age of 23, outside Pakistan's Supreme Court, two years before our Balkan #MeToo. The road to justice for the law student was not easy. In 2016, she was stabbed 23 times by her ex-partner and the perpetrator managed to come out of the legal dispute unscathed. Then Khadija became a hashtag. #JusticeforKhadija became a trend on Twitter, with over two million internet users, attracting the attention of the international media to the case. Khadija won the appeal.
The change brought about by #MeToo has affected all areas of modern life, from language to legislation. Even the Vatican was no exception. #Churchtoo came to the forefront in 2017, concerned with the sexual abuse by leading figures of the Catholic Church - nuns, influenced by the feminist movement, publicly denounced the perpetrators. Since then, at least 15 cases of sexual abuse as well as cases of cover-ups by priests have taken the path of justice.
Every time a movement emerges, it doesn't take long for opposition movements to appear - such as the white American Trump supporters who oppose &nbsp;#BlackLivesMatter with #AllLivesMatter or racists shouting that "foreigners will come and take our jobs". So in the face of #MeToo, misogynists talk about the "dictatorship of political correctness" - a good way to cover up the fear of the threat against their privileges.
The conservative backlash against #MeToo is also recorded in a study conducted by the University of Houston in 2019 (USA): 27 percent of men refused to be alone on a professional meeting with female colleagues, one in five said they would not hire a woman for a job that would require a close working relationship (such as business travel), while the same percentage stated that they would be hesitant about hiring an attractive woman. And since internalised misogyny holds up so well, this hesitation does not just concern men. In a similar survey in 2018, while #MeToo was causing an upheaval in the country, one in ten female employers also stated they were unsure about hiring a female employee.

The Outcry Sweeping Away Perpetrators and Authorities

Greece is being swept from the MeToo movement. When the case of Dimitris Lignadis broke the whole country was fired up. How deep does misogyny run?

Le voile est enfin levé.

Le mouvement #MeToo « parle » de nombreuses langues, mais raconte une seule et même histoire, « l'histoire de la chasse vue du côté du lion » (comme le dit un proverbe africain). Le mouvement, qui se répand (enfin) dans toute la Grèce, a déjà trois ans dans le monde entier. Il fait bien plus qu'envoyer quelques hommes puissants en prison pour les viols qu'ils ont commis : il déplace l'ordre du jour du débat public, influence le climat politique, s'oppose aux institutions puissantes, ébranle le sexisme structurel, remet en question les privilèges de classe, d'ethnie et de sexe dans la pratique, s'attaque au mythe de l'hétéronormativité, expose la culture du viol, brise les fondements des hiérarchies et des structures de pouvoir abandonnées et exige des changements dans les « sanctuaires » du patriarcat, du pouvoir législatif et du pouvoir exécutif.
« J'avais sept ans », disait le panneau tenu par Nancy Allen ce jour-là en novembre 2017, alors qu'elle marchait parmi d'innombrables autres femmes au cœur de Hollywood, près du théâtre où les Oscars sont décernés chaque année. Ce signe était à la fois une confession, un cri et une revendication. « Harvey Weinstein est une blague, les travailleuses viennent de se réveiller » criaient les femmes, car #MeToo était déjà à l'origine des premiers tremblements de terre dans l'industrie du spectacle.
« Pour chaque Weinstein, il y a une centaine d'hommes dans le quartier qui font exactement la même chose », affirme Tarana Burke, une militante du Bronx qui a lancé la campagne #MeToo en 2006 - 11 ans avant que le mouvement ne devienne mondial, avec près de cinq millions de personnes répondant dans les 24 heures au tweet de l'actrice Alyssa Milano et partageant leurs expériences sur les réseaux sociaux.
Tarana Burke a raison : Hollywood et l'industrie du divertissement ont beau attirer plus de publicité dans toutes les situations, même dans les cas d'abus sexuels, mais aucun lieu de travail ou communauté n'est épargné par les abus et les violences sexuelles.
Partout, les femmes, les personnes LGBTQI et tous ceux qui sont en position de faiblesse dans le système patriarcal sont menacés de la même manière. Sur les glorieux boulevards de New York et dans les ruelles étroites de Mumbai, dans les bureaux des multinationales et dans les chaînes de production des usines, dans les amphithéâtres et dans leurs propres maisons.
Les abus, le harcèlement sexuel, le viol ne sont pas discriminatoires, mais, comme le montrent les recherches, il existe des emplois ou des conditions qui rendent les gens encore plus vulnérables. Il suffit de jeter un coup d'œil à la multitude d'enquêtes republiées par l'Institute for Women's Policy Research, l'un des groupes de réflexion les plus puissants des États-Unis, pour comprendre pourquoi certains groupes ont du mal à briser le silence : les réfugiés et les demandeurs d'asile, les immigrés sans papiers et ceux qui n'ont pas de permis de séjour permanent, les travailleurs de la restauration, ceux qui fournissent des services de nettoyage et ceux qui travaillent dans le secteur agricole dans les régions reculées, les femmes dans les secteurs à prédominance masculine (comme l'armée, le secteur de la construction, la recherche scientifique).
Le mouvement #MeToo ne dit rien de neuf, au contraire, il dit quelque chose de très ancien, seulement il le dit haut et fort, en simultané dans le monde entier. Et c'est sa force, de donner une voix à ceux qui se sont fait voler la leur par le patriarcat, une visibilité à ceux que le patriarcat rend invisibles, de remettre en question les relations de pouvoir, de résister à l'exploitation, d'exiger un autre monde. C'est exactement ce que font tous les mouvements d'émancipation et de libération. À une différence près : #MeToo, né et élevé dans les mouvements féministes, est un enfant de l'ère numérique.
Les réseaux sociaux donnent aux mouvements une visibilité sans précédent et la possibilité de diffuser leur message simultanément, sans l'intermédiaire des médias, dans le monde entier. Sur Google par exemple, dans la première année suivant le lancement de #MeToo, les recherches sur le harcèlement sexuel ont augmenté de 95 % par rapport à 2010, tandis que l'ensemble de la presse américaine a été contrainte de s'engager sur cette question et d'en faire sa priorité pendant neuf mois.
Il semble que la phrase (et l'attitude) forgée et transmise par les féministes des années 1970, selon laquelle « le personnel est politique », soit maintenant absolument fondée.
Prenons, par exemple, l'histoire de Sofia Bekatorou. En racontant son viol, la championne de voile grecque a mis au jour tout un réseau de relations et de dépendances, d'enchevêtrements de pouvoir et de pouvoir financier dans le domaine du sport professionnel. La même chose a été réalisée grâce aux aveux de Nikos S. (un homme qui prétend avoir été violé par le célèbre acteur/metteur en scène et ancien directeur artistique du Théâtre national de Grèce, Dimitris Lignadis, ndlr) : révéler l'abus de pouvoir et le favoritisme dans le monde du théâtre, qui est allé jusqu'à la dissimulation de l'affaire par le ministre concerné, malgré les indices sérieux d'actes criminels.
En peu de temps, le #MeToo grec a déjà accompli beaucoup. Il suffit de rappeler qu'il y a trois mois, la police a arrêté les quelques féministes qui protestaient contre les féminicides sur la place Syntagma tandis que jeudi, le mouvement et tout ce qu'il a révélé jusqu'à présent ont été discutés dans les largeurs au Parlement. C'est précisément ce mouvement qui incite la justice à agir rapidement, qui pousse à des changements dans le cadre institutionnel du sport professionnel, qui soutient les universités, en premier lieu l'université Aristote de Thessalonique où des dizaines de plaintes ont été déposées, pour créer des comités d'égalité.
Sous l'énorme pression de ce mouvement, le Premier ministre a annoncé des changements dans le code pénal en durcissant les peines pour les délits sexuels et s'est engagé à ce que l'éducation sexuelle soit introduite dans toutes les écoles à la rentrée. Un site metoo.gov.gr doit aussi être mis en place pour que les plaintes puissent y être déposées en temps réel. Par ailleurs, un registre spécial doit être établi pour tous les professionnels qui entrent en contact avec des enfants et des adolescents, et le Parlement doit ratifier la Convention 190 de l'Organisation internationale du travail pour l'élimination de la violence et du harcèlement, tandis que les codes de conduite deviendront obligatoires pour toutes les entreprises.

Il a fallu que d'innombrables femmes victimes de la traite des êtres humains souffrent sans que la société ne les regarde. Mais bien que tardivement, nous en sommes maintenant arrivés là et le voile du silence a enfin été déchiré en morceaux.
Nous en sommes là avec des demandes, car il ne suffit pas que les survivantes de la violence sexiste parlent, mais nous avons aussi besoin d'une police et d'une justice qui agissent rapidement, efficacement et, surtout, sans traumatiser les gens encore et encore. Il faut des structures pour soutenir les victimes, des comités d'égalité dans tous les organes et syndicats, l'inspection du travail a besoin d'être renforcée et d'une infrastructure logistique, les personnes qui sont maltraitées dans les camps de réfugiés et d'immigrants doivent avoir voix au chapitre. Le mouvement #MeToo, tel qu'il s'est déroulé dans le monde jusqu'à présent, a beaucoup à nous apprendre sur les luttes à venir.
<h3>Un « fleuve » qui fait rage dans le monde entier</h3>
En parlant publiquement de tout ce qu'on nous avait enseigné à garder secret ou entre quatre murs (et parfois même dans nos murs intérieurs), en parlant à haute voix des viols, des abus, des discriminations, les personnes qui, partout dans le monde, sont entrées dans le fleuve déchainé de #MeToo ont accompli beaucoup et exigent davantage encore.
Ces dernières années, les femmes du monde entier sont descendues massivement dans la rue lors de manifestations explosives pour demander justice. De « Ni Una Menos » en Argentine, au « # UykularınızKaçsın » turc (« Comment pourras-tu dormir »), la demande est singulière et universelle : ce monde doit changer.
En Grèce, où le mouvement des droits de la femme a lutté pendant des décennies et où le mouvement LGBTQI se bat également avec vigueur, la question de l'oppression des femmes entre enfin sur le devant de la scène politique. Mais dans les Balkans, chez nos voisins, les femmes réclament également un changement. En janvier dernier en Serbie, Milena Radulovic, une actrice de 26 ans, a dénoncé avoir été abusée sexuellement quand elle était encore mineure par un professeur et un réalisateur bien connu. D'autres femmes l'ont suivie en brisant le silence. Ces allégations ont rapidement déclenché une réaction brutale en Croatie, en Slovénie, en Macédoine du Nord et dans la Fédération de Bosnie-Herzégovine.
Les femmes s'unissent dans cette lutte commune, une voix faisant écho à celle des autres, déclenchant des batailles dans l'espace et le temps. « Aujourd'hui est une victoire pour toutes les femmes », a dit Khadija Siddiqui, 23 ans, devant la Cour suprême du Pakistan, deux ans avant notre #MeToo des Balkans. Le chemin vers la justice pour cette étudiante en droit n'a pas été facile. En 2016, elle a été poignardée à 23 reprises par son ex-conjoint et l'auteur a réussi à sortir indemne du conflit juridique. Puis Khadija est devenue un hashtag. #JusticeforKhadija est devenu une tendance sur Twitter, avec plus de deux millions d'internautes, attirant l'attention des médias internationaux sur l'affaire. Khadija a gagné en appel.
Le changement apporté par #MeToo a touché tous les domaines de la vie moderne, de la langue à la législation. Même le Vatican n'a pas fait exception. #Churchtoo est passé au premier plan en 2017, pour dénoncer les abus sexuels commis par des personnalités de l'Église catholique. Des religieuses, influencées par le mouvement féministe, ont dénoncé publiquement les auteurs. Depuis, au moins 15 cas d'abus sexuels ainsi que des cas de dissimulation par des prêtres ont fini devant les tribunaux.
Chaque fois qu'un mouvement émerge, il ne faut pas longtemps pour que des mouvements d'opposition apparaissent, tels que les partisans blancs de Donald Trump s'opposant à #BlackLivesMatter avec #AllLivesMatter, criant que « les étrangers viendront nous prendre nos emplois ». Ainsi, face à #MeToo, les misogynes parlent de la « dictature du politiquement correct ». Un bon moyen de dissimuler la peur qu'ils ont de perdre leurs privilèges.
La réaction conservatrice contre #MeToo est également consignée dans une étude menée par l'université de Houston en 2019 (États-Unis). 27 % des hommes ont refusé d'être seuls lors d'une réunion professionnelle avec des collègues féminines, un sur cinq a déclaré qu'ils n'engageraient pas une femme pour un travail qui nécessiterait une relation de travail étroite (comme les voyages d'affaires), tandis que le même pourcentage a déclaré qu'ils hésiteraient à engager une femme attirante. Et comme la misogynie internalisée tient si bien la route, cette hésitation ne concerne pas que les hommes. Dans une enquête similaire réalisée en 2018, alors que la vague #MeToo balayait les Etats-Unis, une femme sur dix déclarait qu'elle hésitait à embaucher une autre femme.

La vague #MeToo balaye (enfin) la Grèce

Il a fallu des dizaines de féminicides et de victimes d'abus, mais le voile du silence est enfin levé en Grèce.

#MeToo "mówi" wieloma językami, ale we wszystkich opowiada tę samą historię – "historię polowania z perspektywy lwa" (jak głosi afrykańskie przysłowie). Ruch, który (w końcu) rozprzestrzenia się w Grecji, na świecie obchodzi trzecią rocznicę. Nie tylko posłał do więzienia kilku wpływowych mężczyzn za gwałty, ale osiąga znacznie więcej: zmienia porządek debaty publicznej, wpływa na klimat polityczny, przeciwstawia się potężnym instytucjom, wstrząsa strukturalnym seksizmem, kwestionuje klasowe, etniczne i genderowe przywileje, rozprawia się z mitem heteronormatywności, demaskuje kulturę gwałtu, burzy fundamenty poddańczych hierarchii i struktur władzy, domaga się zmian w "sanktuariach" patriarchatu: we władzy ustawodawczej i wykonawczej.
"Miałam 7 lat" - to znak trzymany przez Nancy Allen tego dnia w listopadzie 2017 r., gdy wśród niezliczonych innych kobiet szła przez centrum Hollywood, niedaleko teatru, w którym co roku rozdawane są Oscary. Ten znak był jednocześnie wyznaniem, krzykiem i roszczeniem. "Harvey Weinstein to żart, pracownice się obudziły" - krzyczały kobiety, gdy #MeToo wywoływało już pierwsze trzęsienia ziemi w przemyśle rozrywkowym.

Burke ma rację: Hollywood i przemysł rozrywkowy mogą przyciągnąć większy rozgłos w każdej sytuacji – teraz także i w przypadku nadużyć – ale żadne miejsce pracy ani żadna społeczność nie może twierdzić, że jest niewinna, jeśli chodzi o nadużycia i przemoc.
Kobiety, osoby LGBTQI i wszyscy ci, którzy są poszkodowani w patriarchalnym systemie relacji, wszędzie są tak samo zagrożeni: na imponujących bulwarach Nowego Jorku i w ciasnych zaułkach Bombaju, w biurach międzynarodowych koncernów i na liniach produkcyjnych fabryk, w amfiteatrach i we własnych domach.
Nadużycia, molestowanie seksualne, gwałty mogą przydarzyć się wszystkim i wszędzie, ale, jak pokazują badania, istnieją zawody lub warunki, które czynią ludzi bardziej bezbronnymi. Wystarczy spojrzeć na liczne badania opublikowane przez Institute for Women's Policy Research, jeden z najpotężniejszych think-tanków w USA, aby zrozumieć, dlaczego niektórym grupom trudno jest przerwać milczenie. Są to uchodźcy i osoby ubiegające się o azyl, nieudokumentowani imigranci i osoby nieposiadające pozwolenia na stały pobyt, pracownicy branży gastronomicznej, osoby świadczące usługi sprzątania i pracujące w sektorze rolniczym na odległych obszarach, kobiety w dziedzinach zdominowanych przez mężczyzn (takich jak wojsko, sektor budowlany, badania naukowe).
#MeToo nie mówi niczego nowego, a wręcz przeciwnie – mówi coś bardzo starego, tylko mówi to głośno i na całym świecie równocześnie, głosami wielu osób. To właśnie sedno tego ruchu – daje głos tym, którym patriarchat go odebrał; daje widoczność tym, których uczynił niewidzialnymi; rzuca wyzwanie relacjom władzy, przeciwstawia się wyzyskowi, domaga się innego świata. To jest dokładnie to, co zawsze robią ruchy emancypacyjne i wyzwoleńcze. Z jedną różnicą, gdyż #MeToo – zrodzony i wychowany z ruchów feministycznych – jest dzieckiem ery cyfrowej.
Media społecznościowe dają ruchom bezprecedensową widoczność i możliwość rozprzestrzeniania ich przesłania jednocześnie na całym świecie, bez pośrednictwa mediów. Na przykład w Google, w pierwszym roku po rozpoczęciu #MeToo, wyszukiwania dotyczące molestowania i nadużyć wzrosły o 95 proc. w porównaniu z rokiem 2010, a cała amerykańska prasa została zmuszona do zaangażowania się w tę kwestię i przez dziewięć miesięcy traktowania jej jako priorytetowej.
Wygląda na to, że zdanie (i postawa) ukute i przekazane nam przez feministki z lat 70-tych, że "osobiste jest polityczne", jest teraz całkowicie uzasadnione.
Weźmy na przykład historię Sofii Bekatorou, która podzieliła się historią swojego gwałtu. Jej osobiste doświadczenie przemocy ujawniło całą sieć relacji i zależności, uwikłań i władzy finansowej w świecie sportu. To samo osiągnięto dzięki zeznaniom Nikosa S. [mężczyzny, który twierdzi, że został zgwałcony przez słynnego aktora, reżysera i byłego dyrektora artystycznego greckiego Teatru Narodowego, Dimitrisa Lignadisa - red.]. Ujawnienie nadużyć władzy i przywilejów w świecie teatru, które doprowadziło do tego, że Ministra Kultury Lina Mendoni zatuszowała sprawę, mimo że istniały poważne przesłanki wskazujące na popełnienie przestępstwa.
W krótkim czasie grecki ruch #MeToo osiągnął już wiele – wystarczy powiedzieć, że trzy miesiące temu policja aresztowała kilka feministek protestujących przeciwko zabójstwom kobiet na placu Syntagma, a w czwartek ruch i wszystko, co do tej pory ujawnił, były przedmiotem dyskusji w Parlamencie. To właśnie ten ruch wzywa wymiar sprawiedliwości do szybkiego działania, naciska na zmiany w instytucjonalnych ramach sportu zawodowego, wspiera uniwersytety – przede wszystkim Uniwersytet Arystotelesa w Salonikach, gdzie złożono dziesiątki skarg – w tworzeniu komisji antydyskryminacyjnych.
Pod ogromną presją tego ruchu premier zapowiedział zmiany w kodeksie karnym w formie zaostrzenia kar za przestępstwa seksualne i zobowiązał się, że od września edukacja seksualna zostanie wprowadzona we wszystkich szkołach. Powstanie centralny portal metoo.gov.gr, gdzie będzie można składać skargi, stworzony zostanie specjalny rejestr dla wszystkich, którzy mają w pracy kontakt z dziećmi i młodzieżą. Od parlamentu będzie się oczekiwać ratyfikacji &nbsp;Konwencji nr 190 Międzynarodowej Organizacji Pracy dot. eliminacji przemocy i molestowania w świecie pracy, a kodeksy postępowania staną się obowiązkowe dla każdego przedsiębiorstwa.
Ten kraj potrzebował dziesiątek kobietobójstw, takich jak to, którego ofiarą padła Eleni Topaloudi [18-letnia studentka brutalnie zgwałcona i zamordowana przez dwóch młodych mężczyzn na Rodos - red.], opłakiwania ofiar maczyzmu, takich jak Vangelis Giakoumakis [20-latek, który popełnił samobójstwo po poważnym zastraszaniu przez kolegów ze studiów - red.] i zobaczenia Zaka Costopoulosa brutalnie zamordowanego w południe w biały dzień na środku ulicy, aby znaleźć się tutaj. Konieczne są odpowiednie struktury mające na celu wsparcie ofiar, we wszystkich organach i związkach potrzebne są komisje antydyskryminacyjne, a inspekcja pracy wymaga większych kadr i poprawy infrastruktury logistycznej. Ludzie maltretowani w obozach dla uchodźców i imigrantów muszą mieć głos. To, jak akcja #MeToo, rozwinęła się na całym świecie, może nas wiele nauczyć o czekających nas zmaganiach.
<h3>Wzburzona "rzeka" na całym świecie</h3>
Mówią publicznie o wszystkim, co – jak nas uczono – powinno pozostać niewypowiedziane albo nie wychodzić poza nasze cztery ściany. Mówią głośno o gwałtach, nadużyciach, dyskryminacji. Ludzie na całym świecie, którzy weszli do wzburzonej rzeki #MeToo, osiągnęli wiele i żądają znacznie więcej.
W ostatnich latach kobiety na całym świecie masowo wyszły na ulicę głośno protestując i domagając się sprawiedliwości. Od "Ni Una Menos" ("Ani jednej mniej") w Argentynie, po tureckie "#UykularınızKaçsın" ("Obyś nie mógł spać") żądanie jest jedno i jest uniwersalne – ten świat musi się zmienić.
W Grecji, gdzie ruch na rzecz praw kobiet przez dziesięciolecia stoczył wiele poważnych bitew, a ruch LGBTQI również prowadzi ostrą walkę, kwestie ucisku ze względu na płeć wkraczają wreszcie na główną scenę polityczną. Dzieje się to jednak także w naszym sąsiedztwie – kobiety na Bałkanach domagają się zmian. W styczniu w Serbii 26-letnia aktorka Milena Radulovic wyznała, że, kiedy była jeszcze nieletnia, została wykorzystana seksualnie przez znanego profesora i reżysera. Inne kobiety poszły jej śladem, przerywając milczenie. Oskarżenia te szybko wywołały reakcję w Chorwacji, Słowenii, Macedonii Północnej oraz Federacji Bośni i Hercegowiny.
Kobiety jednoczą się w tej wspólnej walce i wydaje się, że jeden głos odbija się echem od głosów innych, wywołując bitwy w przestrzeni i czasie. "Dzisiaj zwyciężyły wszystkie kobiety", stwierdziła przed Sądem Najwyższym Pakistanu 23-letnia Khadija Siddiqui, dwa lata przed naszym bałkańskim #MeToo. Droga do sprawiedliwości dla studentki prawa nie była łatwa. W 2016 roku została 23 razy pchnięta nożem przez swojego byłego partnera, a sprawcy udało się wyjść ze sporu prawnego bez szwanku. Wtedy imię Khadijy stało się hasztagiem. #JusticeforKhadija trafiło na listę trendów na Twitterze za sprawą ponad dwóch milionów internautów, przyciągając do sprawy uwagę międzynarodowych mediów. Khadija wygrała apelację.
Zmiana wywołana przez #MeToo wpłynęła na wszystkie dziedziny współczesnego życia, od języka po prawodawstwo. Nawet Watykan nie był wyjątkiem. #Churchtoo pojawił się w 2017 r. jako rezultat zaniepokojenia nadużyciami seksualnymi ze strony czołowych postaci Kościoła katolickiego – zakonnice, pod wpływem ruchu feministycznego, publicznie potępiły sprawców. Od tego czasu co najmniej 15 spraw dotyczących nadużyć seksualnych, a także przypadków tuszowania ich przez księży, weszło na drogę sądową.
Za każdym razem, gdy pojawia się jakiś ruch, nie trzeba długo czekać, aż pojawią się ruchy opozycyjne, takie jak biali amerykańscy zwolennicy Trumpa, którzy przeciwstawiają #BlackLivesMatter hasłem #AllLivesMatter, czy rasiści krzyczący, że "cudzoziemcy przyjadą i zabiorą nam pracę". W obliczu #MeToo mizogini mówią więc o "dyktaturze politycznej poprawności" – to dobry sposób na ukrycie strachu przed zagrożeniem dla ich przywilejów.
Reakcję w duchu konserwatywnym przeciwko #MeToo odnotowano również w badaniu przeprowadzonym przez Uniwersytet w Houston (USA) w 2019 roku: 27 procent mężczyzn odmówiło bycia samym na spotkaniu o charakterze zawodowym z koleżankami z pracy; jeden na pięciu powiedział, że nie zatrudniłby kobiety do pracy, która wymagałaby bliskiej współpracy (takich jak podróże służbowe); tyle samo badanych stwierdziło, że wahałoby się przed zatrudnieniem atrakcyjnej kobiety. A ponieważ zinternalizowany mizoginizm jest tak głęboko zakorzeniony, takie wątpliwości nie występują tylko u mężczyzn. W podobnym badaniu w 2018 roku, gdy ruch #MeToo właśnie wstrząsnął krajem, jedna na dziesięć pracodawczyń również stwierdziła, że nie jest pewna, czy zatrudniłaby kobietę.

Greckie #MeToo: sprawcy i władze pod pręgierzem

W Grecji w końcu opada zasłona milczenia wokół przemocy motywowanej płcią. Konieczne były dziesiątki ofiar.

El #MeToo "habla" muchos idiomas, pero cuenta la misma historia en todos ellos. Como dice un proverbio africano, "hasta que los leones no tengan sus propios historiadores, las historias de cacería seguirán glorificando al cazador". El movimiento, que por fin se está extendiendo por Grecia, cumple ya tres años en todo el mundo. No solo ha encarcelado a algunos hombres poderosos por las violaciones que cometieron, sino que está consiguiendo mucho más: cambia la agenda, influye en el clima político, se enfrenta a instituciones poderosas, sacude el machismo estructural, cuestiona los privilegios de clase, étnicos y de género en la práctica, se enfrenta al mito de la heteronormatividad, expone la cultura de la violación, destroza los cimientos de las jerarquías y estructuras de poder y exige cambios en los "santuarios" del patriarcado, el poder legislativo y el ejecutivo.
"Yo tenía siete años", rezaba el cartel que sostenía Nancy Allen aquel día de noviembre de 2017, mientras caminaba entre otras innumerables mujeres en el corazón de Hollywood, cerca del teatro donde se entregan los Oscar cada año. Esa pancarta era a la vez una confesión, un grito y una reivindicación. "Harvey Weinstein es una broma, las trabajadoras acaban de despertar" gritaban las mujeres cuando el #MeToo ya provocaba los primeros terremotos en la industria del entretenimiento.
"Por cada Weinstein, hay cien hombres en el barrio que hacen exactamente lo mismo", dijo Tarana Burke, una activista del distrito neoyorkino del Bronx que lanzó la campaña #MeToo en 2006, nada menos que once años antes de que se convirtiera en un movimiento global. En 2017 cerca de cinco millones de personas respondieron en 24 horas al tuit de la actriz Alyssa Milano y compartieron sus experiencias en las redes sociales.
Burke tiene razón. Hollywood y la industria del entretenimiento pueden atraer más publicidad en cualquier situación, también ahora con las denuncias de abusos, pero ningún lugar de trabajo o comunidad puede declararse inocente en materia de agresiones y violencia.
Las mujeres, las personas de la comunidad LGTBI y todos aquellos que se encuentren en una posición de desventaja dentro del sistema patriarcal de relaciones, están igualmente amenazados en todas partes: en los gloriosos bulevares de Nueva York y en los estrechos callejones de Bombay. En las oficinas de las multinacionales y en las líneas de producción de las fábricas. En los anfiteatros y en sus propios hogares.
Los abusos, el acoso sexual y las violaciones no discriminan, pero, como demuestran las investigaciones, hay trabajos o condiciones que hacen a las personas aún más vulnerables. Basta con echar un vistazo a la multitud de encuestas publicadas por el Institute for Women's Policy Research, uno de los think tanks más poderosos de Estados Unidos, para entender por qué a ciertos grupos les resulta difícil romper el silencio. Las refugiadas y solicitantes de asilo, las inmigrantes indocumentadas y las que no tienen permiso de residencia permanente, las trabajadoras del sector de la restauración. &nbsp;Las que prestan servicios de limpieza y las que trabajan en el sector agrícola en zonas remotas. Las mujeres en ámbitos dominados por hombres como el ejército, el sector de la construcción o la investigación científica.
El #MeToo no dice nada nuevo, al contrario, dice algo muy antiguo, solo que lo dice en voz alta, simultáneamente y en todo el mundo. Y este es precisamente su núcleo; dar voz a quienes el patriarcado les ha robado la voz, dar visibilidad a quienes el patriarcado mantiene invisibles, desafiar las relaciones de poder, resistir a la explotación, exigir otro mundo. Eso es exactamente lo que hacen siempre los movimientos de emancipación y liberación, con una diferencia: El #MeToo, que ha nacido y se ha criado dentro de los movimientos feministas, es fruto de la era digital.
Las redes sociales dan a los movimientos una visibilidad sin precedentes y la capacidad de difundir su mensaje de manera simultánea y sin mediación de los medios de comunicación, en todo el mundo. En Google, un año después de que arrancara el movimiento &nbsp;#MeToo, las búsquedas sobre acoso y abuso aumentaron un 95% en comparación con 2010, mientras que toda la prensa estadounidense se vio obligada a ocuparse de este tema y a mantenerlo en su agenda durante nueve meses.
Parece que la frase (y la actitud) acuñada y transmitida por las feministas de los años 70, donde "lo personal es político", está ahora absolutamente fundamentada.
Consideremos, por ejemplo, la historia de Sofia Bekatorou, que compartió el testimonio de su violación. Su propio abuso reveló toda una red de relaciones y dependencias, enredos de poder y finanzas en el ámbito del deporte profesional. Lo mismo se consiguió con la confesión de Nikos S., un hombre que alega haber sido violado por el afamado actor, director y exdirector artístico del Teatro Nacional de Grecia, Dimitris Lignadis. Se reveló un abuso de poder y el favoritismo en el mundo del teatro, que ha llegado hasta tal punto que la ministra de Cultura, Lina Mendoni, lo ha encubierto, a pesar de los graves indicios de delito.
El #MeToo griego ha conseguido mucho en poco tiempo. Basta decir que hace tres meses la policía detuvo a las pocas feministas que protestaban contra los feminicidios en la plaza de Syntagma y que el jueves el movimiento y todas las revelaciones que ha dejado hasta ahora fueron debatidas en el Parlamento. Es precisamente esta revolución la que urge a la Justicia a moverse con rapidez, la que presiona para que se modifique el marco institucional del deporte profesional, la que apoya a las universidades —sobre todo a la Universidad Aristóteles de Tesalónica donde se han presentado decenas de denuncias— para que creen comités de igualdad.
Bajo la enorme presión del feminismo, el primer ministro Kyriakos Mitsotakis ha anunciado cambios en el Código Penal endureciendo las penas por delitos sexuales y se ha comprometido a que a partir de septiembre se introducirá la educación sexual en todas las escuelas, creará un portal central (metoo.gov.gr) donde se podrán presentar denuncias en tiempo real y un registro especial para todos los profesionales que estén en contacto con niños y adolescentes. Además, el Parlamento deberá ratificar el Convenio 190 de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo para la Eliminación de la Violencia y el Acoso, y los códigos de conducta serán obligatorios para todas las empresas.
A este país le ha costado mucho llorar a las víctimas de los feminicidios y otros asesinatos relacionados con la masculinidad tóxica. Está el caso de Eleni Topaloudi, estudiante de 18 años que fue brutalmente violada y asesinada por dos jóvenes en Rodas. También el del veinteañero Vangelis Giakoumakis, que se suicidó tras sufrir graves acosos por parte de sus compañeros de clase. Hemos tenido que ser testigos de cómo el activista queer Zak Costopoulos era brutalmente asesinado a plena luz del día y en plena calle para llegar hasta aquí. Ha hecho falta que innumerables víctimas de la trata de mujeres sufrieran sin que la sociedad lo viera. Pero aunque sea con retraso, ya estamos aquí y por fin se está rompiendo el silencio.&nbsp;
Estamos aquí con todas las reivindicaciones abiertas, porque no basta con que las supervivientes de la violencia machista hablen, sino que necesitamos una policía y una justicia que actúen con rapidez, eficacia y, sobre todo, sin revictimizar a las personas una y otra vez. Es necesario crear estructuras de apoyo a quienes han pasado por esto. Hay que fomentar comités de igualdad en todos los organismos y sindicatos, la Inspección de Trabajo necesita un refuerzo y una infraestructura logística, las personas que son maltratadas en los campos de refugiados e inmigrantes necesitan tener voz. El #MeToo, tal y como se ha desarrollado hasta ahora en todo el mundo, tiene mucho que enseñarnos sobre las luchas que se avecinan.
<h3>Un "río" embravecido en todo el mundo</h3>
Al hablar públicamente de todo lo que nos han enseñado que debe permanecer sin decirse o dentro de nuestras cuatro paredes (y a veces incluso dentro de nuestras paredes interiores), al hablar en voz alta sobre la violación, el abuso, la discriminación, las personas de todo el mundo que han entrado en el embravecido río #MeToo han logrado mucho y están exigiendo mucho más.
En los últimos años, las mujeres de todo el mundo han salido a la calle en masa y con explosivas protestas exigiendo justicia. Desde "Ni Una Menos" en Argentina, hasta la turca "# UykularınızKaçsın" ("Pierde el sueño"), la demanda es singular y universal: este mundo debe cambiar.
En Grecia, donde el movimiento por los derechos de las mujeres ha librado muchas y serias batallas durante décadas y el movimiento LGTBI también está luchando vigorosamente, las cuestiones de la opresión de género están entrando finalmente en la escena política central. Las mujeres también en nuestros vecinos de los Balcanes. En Serbia, en enero, Milena Radulovic, una actriz de 26 años, denunció que cuando aún era menor de edad sufrió abusos sexuales por parte de un conocido profesor y director; otras mujeres la siguieron y rompieron su silencio. Las acusaciones no tardaron en provocar una reacción en Croacia, Eslovenia, Macedonia del Norte y la Federación de Bosnia y Herzegovina.
Las mujeres se unen en esta lucha común y parece que una voz se hace eco de las otras, desencadenando batallas en el espacio y el tiempo. "Hoy es una victoria para todas las mujeres", declaró Khadija Siddiqui, a los 23 años, ante el Tribunal Supremo de Pakistán, dos años antes de nuestro #MeToo balcánico. El camino hacia la justicia para la estudiante de Derecho no fue fácil. En 2016, fue apuñalada 23 veces por su expareja y el agresor consiguió salir indemne de la disputa legal. Entonces Khadija se convirtió en un hashtag. #JusticeforKhadija se convirtió en tendencia en Twitter, con más de dos millones de internautas. Eso logró atraer la atención de los medios internacionales sobre el caso. Khadija ganó el recurso.
El cambio provocado por el #MeToo ha afectado a todos los ámbitos de la vida moderna, desde el lenguaje hasta la legislación. Ni siquiera se libró el Vaticano. El #Churchtoo saltó a la palestra en 2017, preocupado por los abusos sexuales cometidos por personalidades de la Iglesia católica: las monjas, influidas por el movimiento feminista, denunciaron públicamente a los autores. Desde entonces, al menos 15 casos de abusos sexuales, así como casos de encubrimiento por parte de sacerdotes, han tomado el camino de la justicia.
Cada vez que surge un movimiento, no tardan en aparecer movimientos de oposición, como los blancos estadounidenses partidarios de Trump que se oponen a #BlackLivesMatter con #AllLivesMatter o los racistas que gritan que "los extranjeros vendrán a quitarnos el trabajo". Así que ante el #MeToo, los misóginos hablan de la "dictadura de lo políticamente correcto", una buena forma de encubrir el miedo a la amenaza contra sus privilegios.
La reacción conservadora contra el #MeToo también queda registrada en un estudio realizado por la Universidad de Houston en 2019 (Estados Unidos): el 27% de los hombres se negó a estar a solas en una reunión profesional con colegas mujeres, uno de cada cinco dijo que no contrataría a una mujer para un trabajo que requiriera una relación laboral estrecha (como los viajes de negocios), mientras que el mismo porcentaje declaró que dudaría en contratar a una mujer atractiva. Y como la misoginia interiorizada se mantiene tan bien, esta indecisión no solo afecta a los hombres. En una encuesta similar realizada en 2018, mientras el #MeToo provocaba una agitación en el país, una de cada diez empleadoras también declaró no estar segura de contratar a una empleada.

Un clamor contra la masculinidad tóxica arrasa en Grecia 

Después de decenas de feminicidios y víctimas de abusos, el velo del silencio se está rompiendo por fin en el país heleno

Eleni Topaloudi, Vangelis Giakoumakis, Zak Costopoulos: In Griechenland wurden Dutzende von Femiziden begangen, bis sie als Opfer von toxischer Männlichkeitskultur anerkannt wurden. Das Schweigen ist nun jedoch – wenn auch verspätet – gebrochen.

#MeToo spricht viele Sprachen und erzählt stets eine grausame Geschichte. Die Bewegung, die endlich auch in Griechenland laut wird, gibt es dabei bereits seit mehr drei Jahren. Sie hat nicht nur einige mächtige Männer für die von ihnen begangenen Vergewaltigungen ins Gefängnis gebracht – sie verschiebt die Agenda der öffentlichen Debatte, beeinflusst das politische Klima, stellt sich gegen mächtige Institutionen, rüttelt an strukturellem Sexismus, stellt Klassen-, ethnische und Geschlechterprivilegien infrage, nimmt es mit dem Mythos der Heteronormativität auf, entlarvt "Rape Culture", Vergewaltigungskultur als solche, erschüttert die Grundfesten der aufgegebenen Hierarchien und Machtstrukturen und fordert Veränderungen in den "Heiligtümern" des Patriarchats, der Legislative und der Exekutive.
"Ich war sieben", stand auf dem Schild, das Nancy Allen an jenem Tag im November 2017 in der Hand hielt, als sie zwischen unzähligen anderen Frauen im Herzen Hollywoods in der Nähe des Theaters spazieren ging, in dem jedes Jahr die Oscars verliehen werden. Dieses Schild war Bekenntnis, Aufschrei und Klage zugleich. "Harvey Weinstein is a joke, women workers just got woke", riefen Frauen, als #MeToo bereits die Unterhaltungsindustrie erschütterte.
"Für jeden Weinstein gibt es hundert Männer in der Nachbarschaft, die genau das Gleiche tun", sagte die amerikanische Aktivistin, die bereits 2006 die MeToo-Kampagne ins Leben rief – ganze elf Jahre, bevor sie zu einer globalen Bewegung wurde, bei der fast fünf Millionen Menschen innerhalb von 24 Stunden auf den Tweet der Schauspielerin Alyssa Milano reagierten und ihre Erfahrungen in den sozialen Medien teilten.
Burke hat Recht: Hollywood und die Unterhaltungsindustrie können in jeder Situation – und jetzt auch in Fällen von Missbrauch – mehr Publicity erlangen. Aber kein Arbeitsumfeld und keine Gemeinschaft ist unschuldig, wenn es um Missbrauch und Gewalt geht.
Frauen, LGBTQI-Personen und alle, die sich innerhalb des patriarchalen Beziehungssystems in einer benachteiligten Position befinden, sind überall gleichermaßen bedroht: In den Prachtboulevards von New York und den engen Gassen von Mumbai, in den Büros multinationaler Konzerne und an den Produktionsbändern von Fabriken, in Amphitheatern und in den eigenen vier Wänden.
Sexuelle Belästigung und Vergewaltigung gibt es überall, doch Studien zeigen, dass Menschen in bestimmen Jobs und Arbeitsumfeldern Missbrauch stärker ausgesetzt sind. Die Vielzahl von Umfragen, die vom Institute for Women's Policy Research, einem der einflussreichsten Thinktanks in den Vereinigten Staaten, neu veröffentlicht wurden, zeigen, warum es für bestimmte Gruppen schwierig ist, das Schweigen zu brechen: Geflüchtete und Asylsuchende, Einwanderer ohne Papiere und solche, die keine dauerhafte Aufenthaltsgenehmigung haben, Frauen in der Gastronomie, Reinigungskräfte und solche, die in abgelegenen Gebieten in der Landwirtschaft arbeiten, und Frauen in männerdominierten Bereichen, wie der Armee, dem Bausektor, der Forschung.
Die MeToo-Bewegung prangert nichts Neues an – im Gegenteil, sie spricht immer Dagewesenes aus, nur eben laut und vielstimmig auf der Welt. Genau das ist Kern: Sie gibt denen eine Stimme, denen das Patriarchat die Stimme geraubt hat, sie gibt denen Sichtbarkeit, die das Patriarchat unsichtbar hält, sie stellt Machtverhältnisse infrage, sie wehrt sich gegen Ausbeutung, sie fordert eine andere Welt. Das ist genau das, was Emanzipations- und Befreiungsbewegungen immer tun – mit einem Unterschied: #MeToo ist nicht nur Teil von feministischen Bewegungen, sondern auch des Digitalzeitalters.
Soziale Medien geben Bewegungen eine noch nie dagewesene Sichtbarkeit und die Möglichkeit, ihre Botschaft gleichzeitig und unvermittelt durch die Medien auf der ganzen Welt zu verbreiten: Auf Google zum Beispiel stiegen im ersten Jahr nach dem Start von #MeToo die Suchanfragen nach Belästigung und Missbrauch im Vergleich zu 2010 um 95 Prozent, während die gesamte amerikanische Presse gezwungen war, sich mit diesem Thema zu beschäftigen und es neun Monate lang ganz oben auf ihrer Agenda hielt.
Es scheint, dass die von den Feministinnen der 1970er-Jahre geprägte und überlieferte Phrase (und Haltung), dass "das Persönliche politisch ist", nun absolut begründet ist.
Als Sofia Bekatorou die Geschichte ihrer Vergewaltigung erzählte, offenbarte dies ein ganzes Netz von Missbrauch, Abhängigkeiten und finanzieller Macht im Bereich des Profisports. Dasselbe geschah nun durch das Geständnis von Nikos S., indem er den ehemaligen künstlerischen Leiter des griechischen Nationaltheaters, Dimitris Lignadis der Vergewaltigung beschuldigte: Es ging auch darum, Machtmissbrauch in der Theaterwelt aufzudecken. Etwas, das die Kulturministerin Lina Mendoni zu vertuschten versucht hatte, obwohl es bereits ernsthafte Hinweise auf kriminelle Handlungen gegeben hatte.
In kurzer Zeit hat die griechische #MeToo-Bewegung schon viel erreicht – es genügt zu sagen, dass die Polizei vor drei Monaten noch die wenigen Feministinnen verhaftet hat, die auf dem Syntagma-Platz gegen Femizide protestiert hatten. Am Donnerstag wurde die Bewegung und alles, was sie bisher enthüllt hat, im Parlament breit diskutiert. Es ist genau diese Bewegung, die die Justiz dazu drängt, schnell zu handeln, die auf Änderungen des institutionellen Rahmens für den Profisport drängt, die die Universitäten – allen voran die Aristoteles-Universität Thessaloniki – unterstützt, Gleichstellungsausschüsse zu schaffen, wo Dutzende von Beschwerden eingegangen sind.
Unter dem enormen Druck dieser Bewegung kündigte der Premierminister Änderungen im Strafgesetzbuch an, indem Strafen für Sexualdelikte verschärft werden. Auch erklärte er, ab September Sexualerziehung in allen Schulen einzuführen. Darüber hinaus wurde ein zentrales Portal (metoo.gov.gr) eingerichtet, auf dem Beschwerden in Echtzeit eingereicht werden können sowie ein spezielles Register für alle Fachleute, die mit Kindern und Jugendlichen arbeiten. Vom Parlament wird erwartet, dass es die Konvention 190 der Internationalen Arbeitsorganisation zur Beseitigung von Gewalt und Belästigung ratifiziert, während Verhaltenskodizes für jedes Unternehmen verbindlich werden.
Eleni Topaloudi, eine 18-jährige Studentin, die von zwei jungen Männern in Rhodos brutal vergewaltigt und ermordet wurde; Vangelis Giakoumakis, ein 20-Jähriger, der nach schwerem Mobbing durch Mitschüler Selbstmord beging; Zak Costopoulos, am helllichten Tag mitten auf der Straße brutal ermordet. In Griechenland musste es erst Dutzende solcher Fälle geben – Femizide, Morde, Menschenhandel –, um sie als Opfer einer toxischen Männlichkeitskultur anzuerkennen. Nun – wenn auch verspätet – ist das Schweigen gebrochen.
Es reicht jedoch nicht, dass die Überlebenden über geschlechtsspezifische Gewalt reden. Wir brauchen auch eine Polizei und eine Justiz, die schnell, effizient und vor allem, ohne die Menschen immer wieder zu traumatisieren, handeln; es braucht Strukturen zur Unterstützung der Opfer; es braucht Gleichstellungsausschüsse in allen Gremien und Gewerkschaften; die Arbeitsaufsicht muss unterstützt werden; es muss eine logistische Infrastruktur geben; Menschen, die in Flüchtlingslagern missbraucht wurden, müssen gehört werden. Die Entwicklung von #MeToo weltweit kann uns viel darüber lehren, welche Anstrengungen uns noch bevorstehen.
<h3>Ein mitreißender Fluss</h3>
Indem wir in Griechenland nun öffentlich über all das sprechen, was früher unausgesprochen bleiben sollte – indem wir nun laut über Vergewaltigung, Missbrauch, Diskriminierung sprechen –, klagen wir nicht nur an, wir fordern.&nbsp;
In den letzten Jahren sind Frauen auf der ganzen Welt massenhaft auf die Straße gegangen und haben Gerechtigkeit gefordert. Von #NiUnaMenos ("Keine weitere Frau") in Argentinien bis zum türkischen #UykularınızKaçsın ("Hör auf zu schlafen") ist die Forderung singulär und universell: Diese Welt muss sich ändern.
In Griechenland, wo die Frauenrechtsbewegung seit Jahrzehnten viele ernsthafte Kämpfe ausgefochten hat und auch die LGBTQI-Bewegung energisch kämpft, treten die Themen der Geschlechterunterdrückung endlich in den Mittelpunkt der politischen Szene. Aber auch auf dem Balkan, in unsererer direkten Nachbarschaft, fordern Frauen Veränderungen. Im Januar erklärte Milena Radulovic, eine 26-jährige Schauspielerin, dass sie als Minderjährige von einem bekannten Professor und Regisseur sexuell missbraucht wurde. Andere Frauen folgten ihrem Beispiel und brachen ihr Schweigen. Die Anschuldigungen lösten bald eine Gegenreaktion in Kroatien, Slowenien, Nordmazedonien und der Föderation Bosnien und Herzegowina aus.
Frauen vereinen sich und es scheint, als ob eine Stimme die Stimmen der anderen lauter widerhallen lässt. "Heute ist ein Sieg für alle Frauen", erklärte Khadija Siddiqui, im Alter von 23 Jahren, vor dem Obersten Gerichtshof Pakistans, zwei Jahre vor der balkanischen MeToo-Debatte. Der Weg zur Gerechtigkeit war für die Jurastudentin nicht einfach, nachdem ihr Ex-Partner 23 Mal mit einem Messer auf sie eingestochen und keine Strafe erhalten hatte. Khadijas Name wurde zu einem Hashtag: #JusticeforKhadija wurde mehr als zwei Millionen mal geteilt und lenkte die Aufmerksamkeit der internationalen Medien auf den Fall. Khadijas eingelegte Berufung hatte Erfolg.
Der durch #MeToo herbeigeführte Wandel hat alle Bereiche des modernen Lebens betroffen, von der Sprache bis zur Gesetzgebung. Auch der Vatikan war keine Ausnahme: #Churchtoo trat 2017 in den Vordergrund und beschäftigte sich mit dem sexuellen Missbrauch durch führende Persönlichkeiten der katholischen Kirche – Nonnen prangerten, beeinflusst von der feministischen Bewegung, die Täter öffentlich an. Seitdem haben mindestens 15 Fälle von sexuellem Missbrauch sowie Fälle von Vertuschung durch Priester den Weg der Justiz genommen.
Jedes Mal, wenn eine Bewegung entsteht, dauert es nicht lange, bis Gegenbewegungen auftauchen – wie die weißen amerikanischen Trump-Unterstützer, die #BlackLivesMatter mit #AllLivesMatter entgegentreten, oder Rassisten, die schreien, dass "die Ausländer kommen und unsere Jobs wegnehmen". Im Angesicht von #MeToo sprechen Misogyne also von der "Diktatur der politischen Korrektheit" – auch so kann man die eigenen Privilegien verklären.
Der konservative Backlash gegen #MeToo wird auch in einer Studie der amerikanischen Universität Houston aus dem Jahr 2019 festgehalten: 27 Prozent der Männer weigerten sich, bei einem beruflichen Treffen mit weiblichen Kollegen allein zu sein, jeder Fünfte gab an, dass er keine Frau für einen Job einstellen würde, der eine enge Arbeitsbeziehung erfordert, während der gleiche Prozentsatz angab, dass er zögern würde, eine attraktive Frau einzustellen. Und da Frauenfeindlichkeit so tief sitzt, betrifft dieses Zögern nicht nur Männer. In einer ähnlichen Umfrage im Jahr 2018, als #MeToo für einen Aufruhr im Land sorgte, gab ebenfalls jeder zehnte Arbeitgeber an, dass er unsicher sei, überhaupt eine Mitarbeiterin einzustellen.

Laut gegen Täter, laut gegen Behörden

Nachdem der Theaterintendant Dimitris Lignadis der Vergewaltigung beschuldigt wurde, wurde Griechenland nun vollends von der MeToo-Debatte erfasst.
