A carbon-neutral steel industry could substitute coal in each step of this process. But at the moment, coal remains the most cost-effective option in most cases. What are the alternatives?

Coal generated less than 2 percent of Britain’s electricity in 2020, despite being the largest single energy source seven years earlier. While the country’s electricity gets cleaner every year, there’s one sector where this carbon-rich fossil fuel remains difficult to replace: steelmaking.
If approved, Woodhouse Colliery in Cumbria would be the first deep coal mine to open in the UK for 30 years, and it would produce 2.7 million tonnes of coking coal annually for the steel industry.
Steel has a high strength-to-weight ratio and is relatively cheap to produce – qualities that make the material invaluable in construction and the car industry. As a major component of wind turbines, steel will be a big part of the transition to green energy too.
That’s partially why the global demand for steel is forecast to increase by <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">more than a third by 2050</a>. This could be bad news for the planet, though, as steel manufacturing already accounts for 7 percent of Co2 emissions worldwide and 2.7 percent of UK emissions.&nbsp;
The world needs to find a way to make lots of steel while reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. And <a href="https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/The-Sixth-Carbon-Budget-The-UKs-path-to-Net-Zero.pdf">the government’s independent Climate Change Committee</a> has recommended that steelmaking in the UK should reach near zero carbon emissions by 2035. So what’s the best route to a low-carbon steel industry?
<h3>How to make steel</h3>
To produce steel, iron ore is mined, processed and then alloyed with carbon and other elements. Coking coal, a form of coal with a high carbon content, plays three different roles in this process. It can help turn iron ore into iron, process iron into steel, and it’s also a fuel that can help power these processes.
In an integrated steelworks, coking coal is heated to around 1,100°C to produce a pure form of carbon called coke. Coke reduces the ore to iron in a blast furnace by reacting with oxygen to make carbon monoxide. One molecule of iron ore reacts with three molecules of carbon monoxide, leaving two iron atoms and three molecules of carbon dioxide. The greenhouse gas is then released into the atmosphere as waste.
Finally, iron is converted to steel by altering its carbon content in a basic oxygen furnace. Globally, 90 percent of the steel produced from iron ore is manufactured using this process.

<h3>What are the alternatives?</h3>
 
 &nbsp;However, integrated steelworks aren’t the only place steel is produced – 630 million tonnes of steel scrap is <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">recycled each year</a>, saving lots of energy and 950 million tonnes of CO2, which is more than the annual emissions of the EU’s entire transportation sector. Recycling mainly takes place in an electric arc furnace, where electricity is used to melt and process scrap metal.
But this depends on vast quantities of scrap steel, and a 2015 study found that 85 percent of stainless steel is already recycled after its first use. There’s little room to increase the percentage of scrap in new steel in Europe, so manufacturing steel from iron ore will still be necessary in the future.
Direct reduction of iron ore to form iron is another process that uses less energy than a blast furnace. Natural gas is the fossil fuel of choice for 90 percent of plants using this method, concentrated in the Middle East and North America where gas prices are low. In 2018, only <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">100.5 million tonnes</a> of steel were produced this way – just <a href="https://www.iea.org/reports/iron-and-steel-technology-roadmap">5.6 percent</a> of the total. Directly reducing iron ore using hydrogen generated by clean electricity – otherwise known as green hydrogen – and then processing that in an electric arc furnace also powered by green electricity, is one method for producing low-carbon steel. Continuing to use coal in integrated steelworks, but capturing and either using or storing the CO2 emitted, is another.
<a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">Direct electrolysis</a>, where iron ore is turned directly into steel using electricity, also has potential, but it’s a long way from being commercially viable. With time running short, the surest route to the 2035 deadline for decarbonisation is to use the direct reduction method with hydrogen in electric arc furnaces, or use coal in integrated steelworks with carbon capture and storage. Globally, both are likely to play a role.
 
 &nbsp;In the UK, 95 percent of emissions from steelmaking come from just two sites. It’s here the country’s path to a decarbonised steel sector will be decided. The recently published <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">industrial decarbonisation strategy</a> doesn’t specify what technologies must be used, and so doesn’t exclude the continued use of coking coal so long as the carbon emissions can be captured and used or stored.
Carbon capture is already a competitive option for decarbonising industrial processes such as <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">ammonia production</a>. But CO2 mixes with other gases in steelworks emissions, making the capture process more difficult. Globally, it’s likely that coal will continue to be used for making steel in the 2030s and beyond, due to the lifespan of existing plants and the immaturity of low-carbon alternatives. Fortunately, coal use in steel manufacturing by 2050 would still be compatible with the Paris Agreement, as long as emissions were 40 percent of today’s levels and about a third of those were captured. Hydrogen and electrification would do the rest of the work.
Coal use in steelmaking does not need to cease immediately, but guaranteeing that the future of steelmaking will be low-carbon requires action now. Continued coal use must be met with radical improvements in carbon capture and storage technology – it’s here the industry needs to show it can keep up.

Dans une aciérie intégrée, le charbon à coke est chauffé à environ 1 100 °C pour produire une forme pure de carbone appelée coke. Le coke réduit le minerai en fer dans un haut fourneau au contact de l'oxygène pour produire du monoxyde de carbone.  Mais les aciéries intégrées ne sont pas le seul endroit où l'acier est produit. 630 millions de tonnes de ferraille d'acier sont <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">recyclées chaque année, ce qui</a> permet d'économiser beaucoup d'énergie et 950 millions de tonnes de CO2, soit plus que les émissions annuelles de l'ensemble du secteur des transports de l'UE. Le recyclage s'effectue principalement dans un four à arc électrique, où l'électricité est utilisée pour faire fondre et traiter la ferraille.
Mais cela dépend de grandes quantités de ferraille, et une étude de 2015 a révélé que 85 % de l'acier inoxydable est déjà recyclé après sa première utilisation. Die Kohlenstoffabscheidung ist bereits eine wettbewerbsfähige Option für die Dekarbonisierung industrieller Prozesse wie der <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">Ammoniakproduktion</a>. Allerdings vermischt sich CO² in den Emissionen von Stahlwerken mit anderen Gasen, was den Abscheidungsprozess erschwert. Der Einsatz von Kohle in der Stahlerzeugung muss nicht sofort eingestellt werden, aber um zu garantieren, dass die Zukunft der Stahlerzeugung kohlenstoffarm sein wird, muss jetzt gehandelt werden. Die weitere Kohlenutzung muss mit radikalen Verbesserungen in der Technologie zur Kohlenstoffabscheidung und -speicherung einhergehen. An dieser Stelle muss die Industrie zeigen, dass sie mithalten kann.

Jaka jest zatem najlepsza droga do stworzenia niskoemisyjnego przemysłu stalowego?
<h3>Produkcja stali</h3>
Aby wyprodukować stal, ruda żelaza jest wydobywana, przetwarzana i następnie łączona z węglem i innymi pierwiastkami. Węgiel koksujący, czyli surowiec o wysokiej zawartości węgla, odgrywa w tym procesie trzy różne role. Pomaga przekształcić rudę żelaza w żelazo, przetworzyć żelazo w stal, a także jest paliwem, które pomaga w zasilaniu tych procesów.
W zintegrowanej hucie stali węgiel koksujący jest podgrzewany do temperatury około 1100°C w celu wytworzenia czystej formy węgla zwanej koksem. Koks redukuje rudę do żelaza w wielkim piecu poprzez reakcję z tlenem, w wyniku której powstaje tlenek węgla. Jedna molekuła rudy żelaza reaguje z trzema molekułami tlenku węgla, pozostawiając dwa atomy żelaza i trzy molekuły dwutlenku węgla. Ten gaz cieplarniany jest następnie uwalniany do atmosfery jako odpad.
W końcu żelazo jest przekształcane w stal poprzez zmianę zawartości węgla w piecu tlenowym. W skali globalnej 90 proc. stali produkowanej z rudy żelaza powstaje właśnie w tym procesie.
Neutralny pod względem emisji dwutlenku węgla przemysł stalowy mógłby zastąpić węgiel na każdym etapie tego procesu. Jednak w chwili obecnej węgiel pozostaje w większości przypadków najbardziej opłacalną opcją.
<h3>Jakie są alternatywy?</h3>
Zintegrowane huty nie są jednak jedynym miejscem produkcji stali – 630 mln ton złomu stalowego jest co roku poddawane recyklingowi, co pozwala zaoszczędzić mnóstwo energii i 950 mln ton dwutlenku węgla, czyli więcej niż wynosi roczna emisja całego sektora transportowego w UE. Recykling odbywa się głównie w elektrycznych piecach łukowych, gdzie energia elektryczna wykorzystywana jest do topienia i przetwarzania złomu.
Jest to jednak uzależnione od dostępności ogromnych ilości złomu stalowego, a badanie z 2015 r. wykazało, że 85 proc. stali nierdzewnej jest już poddawane recyklingowi po pierwszym użyciu. W Europie jest więc niewiele przestrzeni na zwiększenie udziału złomu w produkcji nowej stali, dlatego produkcja stali z rudy żelaza będzie nadal konieczna w przyszłości.
Bezpośrednia redukcja rudy żelaza do postaci czystego żelaza to kolejny proces, który zużywa mniej energii niż wielkie piece. 90 procent zakładów na Bliskim Wschodzie i w Ameryce Północnej stosujących tę metodę wykorzystuje przy tym gaz ziemny, paliwo kopalne tanie w tym regionie. W 2018 r. w ten sposób wyprodukowano jednak jedynie 100,5 ton stali – <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/britain-down-to-its-last-coal-power-station-rkvxftjg6">zaledwie 5,6 procent całości produkcji</a>. Inną metodą jest dalsze wykorzystywanie węgla w zintegrowanych stalowniach, ale wychwytywanie i wykorzystywanie lub składowanie wyemitowanego dwutlenku węgla.
Bezpośrednia elektroliza, w której ruda żelaza jest przetwarzana na stal bezpośrednio przy użyciu energii elektrycznej, również ma pewien potencjał, ale daleko jej jeszcze do komercyjnej opłacalności. W Wielkiej Brytanii 95 proc. emisji z produkcji stali pochodzi z dwóch zakładów. To właśnie tutaj zapadnie decyzja o drodze kraju do dekarbonizacji sektora stalowego. Opublikowana niedawno strategia dekarbonizacji przemysłu nie precyzuje, jakie technologie muszą być stosowane, a więc nie wyklucza dalszego wykorzystywania węgla koksującego, o ile emisje dwutlenku węgla mogą być wychwytywane i wykorzystywane lub składowane.
Wychwytywanie dwutlenku węgla stało się już konkurencyjną opcją w dekarbonizacji procesów przemysłowych, takich jak produkcja amoniaku. Jednak dwutlenek węgla miesza się z innymi gazami w emisjach z hut, co utrudnia proces wychwytywania. W skali globalnej jest prawdopodobne, że węgiel będzie nadal wykorzystywany do produkcji stali w latach po 2030 r., ze względu na czas życia istniejących zakładów i niedojrzałość niskoemisyjnych alternatyw. Nie ma potrzeby natychmiastowego zaprzestania wykorzystywania węgla do produkcji stali, ale zagwarantowanie, że produkcja stali w przyszłości będzie niskoemisyjna wymaga podjęcia działań już teraz. Dalszemu wykorzystaniu węgla musi towarzyszyć radykalne udoskonalenie technologii wychwytywania i składowania dwutlenku węgla – to właśnie w tej dziedzinie przemysł musi pokazać, że jest w stanie dotrzymać kroku.

Stal jest niezbędna dla zielonej transformacji – musimy jednak zredukować emisję

Póki co wykorzystanie węgla pozostaje najbardziej opłacalną opcją w przemyśle stalowym. Ale jakie są alternatywy?

El carbón generó menos del 2% de la electricidad británica en 2020, a pesar de ser la mayor fuente de energía siete años antes. Aunque la energía del país es más limpia cada año, hay un sector en el que este combustible fósil rico en carbono sigue siendo difícil de sustituir: la siderurgia.
Si se aprueba, Woodhouse Colliery, en Cumbria, sería la primera mina de carbón a cielo abierto que se abriría en el Reino Unido en 30 años, y produciría 2,7 millones de toneladas anuales de carbón de coque para la industria siderúrgica.
El acero tiene una gran relación resistencia-peso y es relativamente barato de producir, cualidades que hacen que el material sea inestimable en la construcción y la industria del automóvil. Como componente principal de las turbinas eólicas, este material será también una parte importante de la transición a la energía verde.
Por eso, en parte, se prevé que la demanda mundial de acero aumente en más de un tercio de aquí a 2050. Pero esta podría ser una mala noticia para el planeta, ya que la fabricación de acero ya representa el 7% de las emisiones de CO₂ en todo el mundo y el 2,7% de las del Reino Unido.
El mundo necesita encontrar una manera de fabricar mucho acero y reducir al mismo tiempo la huella de carbono de la industria. Y el <a href="https://www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/The-Sixth-Carbon-Budget-The-UKs-path-to-Net-Zero.pdf">Comité de Cambio Climático independiente del Gobierno</a> ha recomendado que la fabricación de este material alcance unas emisiones de carbono casi nulas en 2035. <h3>Cómo se fabrica el acero</h3>
Para producir acero, el mineral de hierro se extrae, se procesa y se alea con carbono y otros elementos. El carbón de coque, una forma de carbón con un alto contenido de carbono, desempeña tres funciones diferentes en este proceso. Puede ayudar a convertir el mineral de hierro en hierro, procesar el hierro en acero y también es un combustible que puede ayudar a alimentar estos procesos.
En una acería integrada, el carbón de coque se calienta a unos 1.100°C para producir una forma pura de carbono. El coque reduce el mineral a hierro en un horno alto al reaccionar con el oxígeno para producir monóxido de carbono. Una molécula de mineral de hierro reacciona con tres moléculas de monóxido de carbono, dejando dos átomos de hierro y tres moléculas de dióxido de carbono. Una industria siderúrgica sin emisiones de carbono podría sustituir al carbón en cada paso de este proceso. Pero de momento, el carbón sigue siendo la opción más rentable en la mayoría de los casos.
<h3>¿Cuáles son las alternativas?</h3>
Sin embargo, las acerías integradas no son el único lugar donde se produce el acero: cada año se reciclan 630 millones de toneladas de chatarra de acero, lo que supone un gran ahorro de energía y 950 millones de toneladas de CO₂. Eso ya es más que las emisiones anuales de todo el sector del transporte de la Unión Europea. El reciclaje se realiza principalmente en un horno de arco eléctrico, donde se utiliza la electricidad para fundir y procesar la chatarra.
Pero para hacer esto hay que conseguir chatarra en grandes cantidades &nbsp;y un estudio de 2015 reveló que el 85% del acero inoxidable ya se recicla después de su primer uso. Hay poco margen para aumentar el porcentaje de chatarra en el acero nuevo en Europa, por tanto, será necesario seguir fabricando acero a partir del mineral de hierro en el futuro.
La reducción directa del mineral de hierro para formar hierro es otro proceso que utiliza menos energía que un horno alto. El gas natural es el combustible fósil elegido por el 90% de las plantas que utilizan este método, concentradas en Oriente Medio y Norteamérica, donde los precios del gas son bajos. En 2018, solo se produjeron 100,5 millones de toneladas de acero de esta manera, apenas el 5,6 por ciento del total. Reducir directamente el mineral de hierro usando hidrógeno generado por electricidad limpia, también conocido como hidrógeno verde, y luego procesarlo en un horno de arco eléctrico también alimentado por electricidad verde, es un método para producir acero bajo en carbono. Otro es seguir utilizando carbón en las acerías integradas, pero capturando y utilizando o almacenando el CO₂ emitido.
La electrólisis directa, en la que el mineral de hierro se convierte directamente en acero utilizando electricidad, también tiene potencial, pero está muy lejos de ser comercialmente viable. En el Reino Unido, el 95% de las emisiones de la siderurgia proceden de solo dos plantas. Es aquí donde se decidirá la senda hacia un sector siderúrgico descarbonizado. La estrategia publicada recientemente no especifica qué tecnologías deben utilizarse, por lo que no excluye el uso continuado de carbón de coque siempre que las emisiones de carbono puedan capturarse y utilizarse o almacenarse.
La captura de carbono ya es una opción competitiva para descarbonizar procesos industriales como la producción de amoníaco. Pero el CO₂ se mezcla con otros gases en las emisiones de las acerías, lo que dificulta el proceso de captura. A nivel mundial, es probable que el carbón siga utilizándose para fabricar acero de aquí a 2030 y más adelante, dada a la vida útil de las plantas existentes y a que las alternativas de bajas emisiones siguen sin ser sólidas. Afortunadamente, el uso de carbón en la fabricación de acero en 2050 seguiría siendo compatible con el Acuerdo de París, siempre que las emisiones fueran el 40% de las actuales y se capturara un tercio de las mismas. El hidrógeno y la electrificación harían el resto del trabajo.
El uso del carbón en la siderurgia no tiene que cesar inmediatamente, pero hay que actuar ahora para garantizar que el futuro de la siderurgia sea bajo en emisiones. La continuación del uso del carbón debe ir acompañada de mejoras radicales en la tecnología de captura y almacenamiento de carbono. Es aquí donde la industria debe demostrar que puede seguir el ritmo.

El acero es vital para la transición ecológica

<h3>Πώς να κατασκευάσετε χάλυβα</h3>
Για την παραγωγή χάλυβα, το σιδηρομετάλλευμα εξορύσσεται, επεξεργάζεται και στη συνέχεια αναμιγνύεται με άνθρακα και άλλα στοιχεία. Ο οπτάνθρακας, μια μορφή άνθρακα με υψηλή περιεκτικότητα σε άνθρακα, παίζει τρεις διαφορετικούς ρόλους σε αυτή τη διαδικασία. Ευτυχώς, η χρήση άνθρακα για την παραγωγή χάλυβα μέχρι το 2050 θα εξακολουθήσει να είναι συμβατή με τη Συμφωνία του Παρισιού, εφόσον οι εκπομπές θα είναι 40% των σημερινών επιπέδων και περίπου το ένα τρίτο αυτών θα δεσμεύεται. Το υδρογόνο και ο εξηλεκτρισμός θα κάνουν την υπόλοιπη δουλειά.
Η χρήση άνθρακα στη χαλυβουργία δε χρειάζεται να σταματήσει αμέσως, αλλά για να εξασφαλιστεί ότι στο μέλλον η χαλυβουργία θα έχει μικρή εξάρτηση σε άνθρακα απαιτείται ανάληψη δράσης τώρα. Η συνεχιζόμενη χρήση άνθρακα πρέπει να αντιμετωπιστεί με ριζικές βελτιώσεις στην τεχνολογία δέσμευσης και αποθήκευσης άνθρακα - εδώ είναι που η βιομηχανία πρέπει να δείξει ότι μπορεί να ανταποκριθεί.
