Polska ma fatalny wizerunek. Polacy muszą się liczyć z tym, że nie pozbędą się go przez długie lata. Ale trzeba próbować. Na początek wyciągnąć wnioski.

Polska jawi się jako kraj nieczuły na krzywdę innych, egoistyczny, nienawistny wobec uchodźców, odmiennych, obcych. Elektorat zwycięzcy wyborów prezydenckich ma w zagranicznej telewizji twarz bezzębnego wieśniaka z rozpadającej się chałupy.
A rozliczenia z Holokaustem ilustruje obrazek sprzed dwóch lat z Monachium, ze szczytu afery o ustawę o IPN: kanclerz Austrii, uśmiechnięty i ze spokojem obserwujący, jak premier Polski pogrąża nas, nieumiejętnie walcząc z zarzutami o gorliwą kolaborację Polaków z Hitlerem.
Teraz przychodzi list od zagranicznych dyplomatów, którzy chcą nas uświadamiać – naprawdę jest w nim mowa o uświadamianiu – w sprawie problemów, które dotykają społeczności LGBT. Jak to możliwe, że ta właśnie kwestia zjednoczyła ambasadora Wenezueli z ambasadorami USA i wielu państw europejskich, które nie uznają przecież władz reprezentowanych przez wenezuelskiego dyplomatę? Jak to możliwe, że nowa ambasador Wielkiej Brytanii, bliskiego sojusznika, zaczyna misję w naszym kraju od wyrażenia dumy z tego, że jest sygnatariuszem listu, w którym uświadamia się tubylców?
To jest możliwe z kilku powodów. Jeden jest związany z postawą obecnych władz wobec LGBT. I na to Polacy, także obecne władze, mogą mieć wpływ. Podejście do społeczności LGBT stało się polem najostrzejszego starcia politycznego, w którym ze strony obozu rządowego padały porównania do bolszewizmu. Przede wszystkim zaś pojawiła się atmosfera przyzwolenia na wytykanie inności.
Naiwne jest zakładanie, że wraz z pożegnaniem PiS cały świat uzna nas za wzór cnót. Nasz zły wizerunek jest bowiem wygodny dla najsilniejszych graczy Zachodu, którzy nie lubią nowej konkurencji, a emancypacja Polski i coraz większa dbałość o własne interesy są raczej cechą stałą.
Co można zrobić? Nie należy liczyć na reklamy wykupione w czołowych gazetach Zachodu ani superprodukcje o polskich superbohaterach. PiS powinien wyciągnąć wnioski z tego, jak używanie ostrego, stygmatyzującego języka szkodzi, i już teraz dokonać zmiany. W sprawach LGBT – na początek stanowczo reagując na przypadki prześladowań czy dyskryminacji – podobnie w innych. Dlaczego Polacy mają być symbolem niechęci wobec imigrantów z innych kręgów kulturowych, skoro prawie nikt ich w Europie nie chce? Mające najlepszy wizerunek kraje debatują jedynie, czy przyjąć gromadkę sierot, a nie dziesiątki milionów ofiar wojen. Polska, nie tylko ze względu na image za granicą, może i powinna dać schronienie grupie najbardziej potrzebujących uchodźców.
Na dłuższą metę w Polsce powinniśmy osiągnąć kompromis w sprawie LGBT, taki, jaki mamy z aborcją. Radykałów nie zaspokoimy, chodzi o znalezienie rozwiązania akceptowalnego dla większości i trwałego na dekady. Pewnie jakiejś formy partnerstwa rejestrowanego, bez prawa do adopcji.
O takich problemach trzeba dyskutować w spokoju i odpowiedzialnie. I to musi trwać, tak jak poprawianie wizerunku.

Poland has a terrible image. Poles must realize that they will not get rid of it for many years. Nevertheless, they should try. And start with drawing conclusions.

Poland is seen as a selfish country, insensitive to the harm of others, hateful to refugees, strangers, or anyone who is different. On foreign television, the winner of the presidential election has the image of an old peasant in a crumbling cottage.
In addition, Poland's attitude towards crimes committed during the Holocaust is illustrated by an image taken in Munich two years ago, at the height of the Law on the Institute of National Remembrance scandal [editor's note: In 2018, Poland made it a crime to publicly claim that it had any responsibility for or complicity in the Holocaust]: the smiling Austrian Chancellor calmly watching the Polish Prime Minister embarrass us all by clumsily refuting the accusations of zealous collaboration between Poles and Hitler.
Now, foreign diplomats have sent us a letter to make us aware - it really uses the term "aware" - of the situation of the LGBT community. How is it possible that the Venezuelan ambassador and the ambassadors of the US and many European countries, who do not even recognise the Venezuelan authorities, agreed on this issue? How is it possible that the new ambassador of Britain, our close ally, is beginning her term by expressing her pride in signing a letter that aims to raise awareness among the locals?
It is possible for several reasons. One relates to the attitude of the current authorities towards the LGBT community, an attitude which can be changed by the Poles. The treatment of the LGBT community in Poland has become the centre of the harshest political clash, during which the government have made comparisons to Bolshevism. Above all, there was a general consensus not to respect diversity.
It is naive to assume that with the end of Law and Justice [pol. PiS], the whole world will recognise us as a model of virtue. Our unfavourable image is convenient for the strongest players of the West who do not like new competition and Poland's emancipation, as well as their increasing concern with their own interests, is a growing theme.
What can be done? We should not rely on advertisements in leading Western newspapers or blockbusters about Polish superheroes. Law and Justice must realise that using harsh, discriminatory language is harmful and already make changes. The party should firmly respond to cases of persecution of LGBT people, as well as to the discrimination against any other group. Why should Poles become the symbol of hatred towards immigrants from other cultural backgrounds, when almost no one in Europe wants to welcome them? Countries with the most favourable of reputations are debating whether to accept a bunch of orphans and not tens of millions of war victims. Poland, not only for the sake of its image abroad, could and should give shelter to refugees in need.
In the long run, in Poland, we should reach a compromise on LGBT rights, similar to the one on abortion. We will never appease the radicals, but we need to find a sustainable solution, one that would be acceptable to the majority. Probably some form of legal partnership, but without the right to adopt children.
Such topics should be discussed calmly and responsibly. And this debate must continue, as should attempts to improve our image.

Η μεταχείριση της ΛΟΑΤ κοινότητας στην Πολωνία έχει γίνει το επίκεντρο της σκληρότερης πολιτικής σύγκρουσης, κατά την οποία η κυβέρνηση έκανε συγκρίσεις με τον Μπολσεβικισμό. Πάνω απ' όλα, υπήρξε μια γενική συναίνεση να μη γίνεται σεβαστή η διαφορετικότητα.&nbsp;
Είναι αφελές να υποθέσουμε ότι όταν έρθει το τέλος του Νόμος και &nbsp;Δικαιοσύνη [PiS], όλος ο κόσμος θα μας αναγνωρίσει ως πρότυπο αρετής. Η δυσμενής εικόνα μας είναι βολική για τους ισχυρότερους παίκτες της Δύσης, στους οποίους δεν αρέσει ότι ο νέος ανταγωνισμός και η χειραφέτηση της Πολωνίας, καθώς και η αυξανόμενη ανησυχία τους για τα δικά τους συμφέροντα, αποτελούν ένα διογκούμενο θέμα.&nbsp;
Τι μπορεί να γίνει; Δεν πρέπει να βασιζόμαστε σε διαφημίσεις σε κορυφαίες δυτικές εφημερίδες ή σε blockbuster ταινίες για Πολωνούς υπερήρωες. Το Νόμος και Δικαιοσύνη πρέπει να συνειδητοποιήσει ότι η χρήση σκληρής γλώσσας που δημιουργεί διακρίσεις είναι επιβλαβής και να κάνει επιτέλους αλλαγές. Το κόμμα πρέπει να απαντήσει με σθένος σε περιπτώσεις δίωξης ΛΟΑΤ ατόμων, καθώς και στις διακρίσεις εις βάρος οποιασδήποτε άλλης ομάδας. Γιατί πρέπει να γίνουν οι Πολωνοί το σύμβολο του μίσους απέναντι σε μετανάστες από άλλα πολιτιστικά υπόβαθρα, όταν σχεδόν κανείς στην Ευρώπη δε θέλει να τους υποδεχθεί; Οι πιο ευυπόληπτες χώρες συζητούν για το εάν θα δεχτούν λίγα ορφανά και όχι δεκάδες εκατομμύρια θύματα πολέμου. Η Πολωνία, όχι μόνο για χάρη της εικόνας της στο εξωτερικό, θα μπορούσε και θα έπρεπε να προσφέρει καταφύγιο σε πρόσφυγες που έχουν ανάγκη.&nbsp;
Μακροπρόθεσμα, στην Πολωνία, θα πρέπει να έρθουμε σε ένα συμβιβασμό για τα δικαιώματα των ΛΟΑΤ, παρόμοιο με αυτόν για τις αμβλώσεις. Δε θα εξευμενίσουμε ποτέ τους ριζοσπάστες, αλλά πρέπει να βρούμε μια βιώσιμη λύση που θα ήταν αποδεκτή από την πλειοψηφία. Πιθανώς κάποια μορφή νομικής συμβίωσης, αλλά χωρίς το δικαίωμα υιοθεσίας παιδιών.&nbsp;
Τέτοια θέματα πρέπει να συζητηθούν ήρεμα και υπεύθυνα. Και αυτή η συζήτηση πρέπει να συνεχιστεί, όπως και οι προσπάθειες βελτίωσης της εικόνας μας.&nbsp;

Γινόμαστε το Ιράν της Ευρώπης. Δε θα είναι εύκολο να αλλάξουμε.

El país tiene una imagen terrible y los polacos debemos darnos cuenta de que no nos libraremos de ella durante muchos años. Pero debemos intentarlo, empezando por sacar conclusiones

Polonia es visto como un país egoísta, insensible al daño de los demás y odioso con los refugiados o cualquier persona que sea diferente. En la televisión extranjera, el ganador de las elecciones presidenciales se ve como un viejo campesino en una casa de campo en ruinas.
Además, la actitud de Polonia hacia los crímenes cometidos durante el Holocausto se ilustra en una imagen tomada en Múnich hace dos años, en el momento álgido del escándalo de la Ley sobre el Instituto para la Memoria Nacional [nota del editor: en 2018, Polonia tipificó como delito afirmar públicamente que el país tenía alguna responsabilidad o complicidad en el Holocausto]: el canciller austríaco, sonriente, observando tranquilamente al primer ministro polaco avergonzarnos con su torpe respuesta a las acusaciones de colaboración recelosa entre los polacos y Hitler.
Ahora, diplomáticos extranjeros nos han enviado una carta para hacernos "conscientes" de la situación de la comunidad LGBT. ¿Cómo es posible que el embajador venezolano y los embajadores de Estados Unidos y muchos países europeos, que ni siquiera reconocen a las autoridades venezolanas, estén de acuerdo en este tema? ¿Cómo es posible que la nueva embajadora de Gran Bretaña, nuestro aliado más cercano, comience su mandato expresando su orgullo por firmar una carta que pretende concienciar a la población local?
Es posible por varias razones. Una tiene que ver con la actitud de las autoridades actuales hacia la comunidad LGBT, una actitud que los polacos podemos cambiar. El trato a esta comunidad en Polonia se ha convertido en el centro de un duro enfrentamiento político en el que el Gobierno ha hecho comparaciones con el bolchevismo. Ante todo, ha habido un consenso general de no respetar la diversidad.
Es ingenuo asumir que con el fin del partido Ley y Justicia el mundo entero nos reconocería como un modelo virtuoso. Nuestra imagen desfavorable es conveniente para los actores más fuertes de Occidente, a los que no les gusta la nueva competencia, y la emancipación de Polonia, así como su creciente preocupación por sus propios intereses, es un tema en auge.
¿Qué se puede hacer? No debemos confiar en los anuncios de los principales periódicos occidentales o en los éxitos de taquilla sobre los superhéroes polacos. Ley y Justicia debe terminar de darse cuenta de que usar un lenguaje duro y discriminatorio es perjudicial. Ya está haciendo cambios, pero el partido debe responder firmemente a los casos de persecución de las personas LGBT, así como a la discriminación contra cualquier otro grupo. ¿Por qué los polacos deben convertirse en el símbolo del odio hacia los inmigrantes de otros orígenes culturales, cuando casi nadie en Europa quiere acogerlos? Los países con la reputación más favorable se debaten entre aceptar a un grupo de huérfanos y no a decenas de millones de víctimas de la guerra. Polonia, no solo por su imagen en el extranjero, podría y debería dar cobijo a los refugiados necesitados.
A largo plazo, en Polonia deberíamos llegar a un compromiso sobre los derechos de las personas LGBT similar al del aborto. Nunca vamos a contentar a los radicales, pero debemos encontrar una solución sostenible, una que sea aceptable para la mayoría. Probablemente alguna forma de asociación legal, pero sin el derecho a adoptar.
Hay que discutir estos temas con calma y responsabilidad. Y este debate debe continuar, así como los intentos de mejorar nuestra imagen.

Polonia se está convirtiendo en el Irán de Europa y cambiarlo no será fácil

El país tiene una imagen terrible y no se librará de ella durante muchos años. Pero debemos intentarlo, empezando por sacar conclusiones

Sein schlechtes Image wird Polen so schnell nicht loswerden. Das heißt aber nicht, dass es das nicht versuchen sollte. Man könnte damit anfangen, endlich die richtigen Schlüsse zu ziehen. 

Polen gilt als egoistisches Land: Hier sei man unsensibel gegenüber dem Leid anderer, man hasse Flüchtlinge, Fremde oder allgemein alle, die anders seien. Im ausländischen Fernsehen hat der Gewinner unserer Präsidentschaftswahlen in etwa das Image eines grantelnden Provinzlers.
Vor zwei Jahren erhitzte ein Foto, mitten im Skandal um das Gesetz über das Institut des Nationalen Gedenkens in München ein Foto aufgenommen, die Gemüter [Anm. d. Red.: Das Gesetz von 2018 stellte es unter Strafe, öffentlich zu behaupten, Polen sei in irgendeiner Form für den Holocaust verantwortlich oder an ihm beteiligt gewesen]. Es steht sinnbildlich für die Haltung Polens gegenüber den Verbrechen, die im Holocaust begangen wurden: Auf dem Bild schaut der österreichische Kanzler dem polnischen Ministerpräsidenten lächelnd dabei zu, wie er ungeschickt die Vorwürfe zur Kollaboration zwischen Polen und Hitler zu widerlegen suchte. Unser Ministerpräsident blamierte damit nicht nur sich selbst, sondern uns alle.
Jetzt haben uns zahlreiche ausländische Diplomaten einen Brief geschickt, um uns auf die Situation der LGBT-Community – wie sie schreiben – "aufmerksam zu machen". Wie ist es möglich, dass der venezolanische Botschafter und die Botschafter der Vereinigten Staaten und vieler europäischer Länder, die die venezolanischen Behörden nicht einmal offiziell anerkennen, sich gerade in dieser Frage einig sind? Wie ist es möglich, dass die neue Botschafterin Großbritanniens, unsere enge Verbündete, zu Beginn ihrer Amtszeit ihren Stolz darüber zum Ausdruck brachte, dass sie einen Brief unterzeichnet hatte, der darauf abzielt, das Bewusstsein der polnischen Bevölkerung zu schärfen?
Dass das möglich ist hat mehrere Gründe. Einer betrifft die Haltung der gegenwärtigen Machthaber zur LGBT-Community – eine Haltung, auf die das polnische Volk selbst Einfluss hat. Wie die LGBT-Community in Polen behandelt wird, ist zum Zentrum des härtesten politischen Konflikts geworden; die Regierung zieht Bolschewismus-Vergleiche. Der allgemeine Konsens: Diversität wird bei uns nicht respektiert.
Es ist naiv anzunehmen, dass wenn es die PiS nicht mehr gebe, die ganze Welt uns fortan als ein tugendhaftes Vorbild ansehen würde. Unser ungünstiges Image kommt den stärksten Akteuren des Westens entgegen, die keine neuen Konkurrenten wollen. Sie fürchten Polens Emanzipation und sind zunehmend um ihre eigenen Interessen besorgt.&nbsp;
Was kann getan werden? Wir sollten uns nicht auf &nbsp;Werbeanzeigen für unser Land in führenden westlichen Zeitungen oder Blockbuster über polnische Superhelden verlassen. Die PiS muss erkennen, dass die Verwendung &nbsp;harscher, diskriminierender Sprache schädlich ist und ihre Linie ändern. Die Partei sollte entschlossen auf die Verfolgung von LGBT-Personen sowie auf die Diskriminierung von anderen Minderheiten reagieren. Warum sollte gerade Polen zum Symbol des Hasses gegen Einwanderer aus anderen Kulturkreisen werden, wenn sie auch sonst fast nirgends in Europa willkommen sind? Die Länder, die sich auf die Fahnen schreiben, offen zu sein, debattieren gerade darüber, ob sie ein paar Waisen aufnehmen sollen , nicht etwa zehn Millionen Kriegsopfer. Polen könnte und sollte, nicht nur seines Images im Ausland willen, bedürftigen Flüchtlingen Schutz gewähren.
Langfristig sollten wir in Polen einen Kompromiss über die LGBT-Rechte erreichen, ähnlich wie beim Thema Abtreibung. Wir werden die Radikalen niemals besänftigen, aber wir müssen eine nachhaltige Lösung finden – eine, die mehrheitsfähig wäre. Vielleicht eine Form der eingetragenen Partnerschaft ohne Adoptionsrecht.
Solche Themen sollten verantwortungsvoll und in Ruhe diskutiert werden. Diese Debatte muss fortgesetzt werden, ebenso wie der Versuch, unser Image zu verbessern.

Polen wird zum Iran Europas – das zu ändern, wird nicht leicht 

Polen hat ein schlechtes Image. Eines, das die Polen nicht so bald loswerden werden. Das heißt aber nicht, dass sie es nicht versuchen sollten.

La Pologne a une image terrible. Les Polonais doivent réaliser qu'ils ne pourront pas s'en débarrasser avant de nombreuses années. Mais ils devraient essayer, en commençant par en tirer des leçons.

La Pologne est perçue comme égoïste, insensible à la souffrance d'autrui, haineuse envers les réfugiés, les étrangers ou toute personne différente. Dans les médias étrangers, le gagnant de l'élection présidentielle a l'image d'un vieux paysan dans une maison en ruine.
Par ailleurs, l'attitude de la Pologne à l'égard des crimes commis pendant l'Holocauste est résumée par une photo prise à Munich il y a deux ans, au plus fort du scandale sur la loi sur l'Institut du souvenir national (depuis 2018, affirmer publiquement que la Pologne a une responsabilité ou une complicité quelconque dans l'Holocauste constitue un délit, ndlr). Sur cette photo, le chancelier autrichien regarde calmement le Premier ministre polonais nous embarrasser en réfutant lourdement les accusations de collaboration zélée entre les Polonais et Hitler.
A présent, des diplomates étrangers nous envoient une lettre pour nous sensibiliser - ils utilisent vraiment le terme « sensibiliser » - sur la situation de la communauté LGBT. Comment est-il possible que l'ambassadeur du Venezuela et les ambassadeurs des États-Unis et de nombreux pays européens, qui ne reconnaissent même pas les autorités vénézuéliennes, se soient mis d'accord sur cette question ? Comment est-il possible que la nouvelle ambassadrice de Grande-Bretagne, notre proche alliée, commence son mandat en exprimant sa fierté de signer une lettre qui vise à sensibiliser la population locale ?
Plusieurs raisons expliquent cela. L'une d'entre elles concerne l'attitude des autorités actuelles envers la communauté LGBT, attitude sur laquelle les Polonais peuvent peser. Le traitement de la communauté LGBT en Pologne fait l'objet du plus dur des affrontements politiques, durant lesquels le gouvernement a fait des comparaisons avec le bolchévisme. Surtout, il y a eu un consensus général pour ne pas respecter la diversité.
Il est naïf de penser qu'une fois le parti Droit et Justice (PiS) disparu, le monde entier nous reconnaîtra comme un modèle de vertu. Notre image défavorable convient aux acteurs les plus puissants de l'Occident qui n'aiment pas la nouvelle concurrence et l'émancipation de la Pologne. D'autant que ces pays se soucient de plus en plus de leurs propres intérêts.
Que faire ? Nous ne devrions pas trop compter sur des articles hagiographiques dans les journaux occidentaux, ni sur des superproductions mettant en scène des super-héros polonais. Le ministère de la Justice doit se rendre compte que l'utilisation d'un langage dur et discriminatoire est nuisible et commencer à changer son discours. Le parti PiS doit réagir avec fermeté aux cas de persécution des personnes LGBT, ainsi qu'à la discrimination à l'encontre de tout autre groupe. Pourquoi les Polonais devraient-ils devenir le symbole de la haine envers les migrants, alors que presque personne en Europe ne veut les accueillir ? Les pays ayant une meilleure réputation sur le sujet ne débattent que de l'opportunité d'accueillir une poignée d'orphelins, pas des dizaines de millions de victimes de guerre. La Pologne pourrait et devrait donner un abri aux réfugiés dans le besoin, et pas seulement pour redorer son image à l'étranger.
À long terme nous devrions parvenir à un compromis sur les droits des LGBT, semblable à celui trouvé sur l'avortement. Nous n'apaiserons jamais les radicaux, mais nous devons trouver une solution durable, qui soit acceptable pour la majorité. Probablement une forme d'union civile, mais sans le droit d'adopter des enfants.
Ces sujets doivent être abordés de manière calme et responsable. Et ce débat doit se poursuivre, tout comme les initiatives pour améliorer notre image.
